WOOSTER, Ohio – The Kenyon College defense held The College of Wooster to 50 rushing yards in Saturday's North Coast Athletic Conference football contest, but the Fighting Scots went to the air to defeat the visiting Lords, 21-7. Wooster's back-up quarterback, Gary Muntean, threw for 267 yards and three touchdowns.
Wooster's first score came via a Muntean pass. At the 9:15 mark of the first quarter, Muntean hit receiver Darrian Owens for a 30-yard scoring strike to give the Fighting Scots a 7-0 lead. In the second quarter, Muntean connected with Justin Rice on a two-yard pass and Wooster went into the break with 14-0 lead.
Meanwhile, Kenyon struggled with turnovers. The Lords fumbled the ball three times, losing two of them, in the first quarter. In the second quarter, the Lords got one of those turnovers back when freshman safety
Curt Williams picked off a Wooster pass in the Kenyon end zone, ending a Fighting Scots drive that started at midfield.
After the half, the Lords took advantage of another Wooster turnover. With the Scots driving again, Kenyon's
Nicholas LaPoint forced a fumble that was recovered by
Quashae Hendryx. When the Kenyon offense took over, the Lords looked to running backs
Brandon January and
Blake Calcei to carry the load. January came up with runs of 1, 24, 3, and 9 yards during the drive. Calcei had a runs of nine and four yards before plunging into the end zone from three yards out.
Down by just one score, the Lords looked to keep momentum going into the fourth quarter. Before they could there, however, the Fighting Scots came up with a big play to end the third quarter. Muntean's 49-yard pass to Owens with no time left on the clock gave Wooster a 21-7 advantage.
Kenyon got the ball three more times in the fourth quarter, but never threatened. One drive ended with a fumble and the other two ended on failed fourth-down conversion attempts.
January finished with 114 rushing yards on 20 carries for the Lords, while Calcei ended up with 41 yards on nine carries. Kenyon quarterback
Jake Bates completed 14-of-28 passes for 95 yards. Freshman
Pierce Brady had five catches for 44 yards and tight end
Greg McIntosh had four catches for 37 yards.
Owens wound up with five catches for 178 yards and the two long touchdowns for Wooster. The Fighting Scots' leading rusher was Sean Hackel, who had 75 yards on 21 runs. He was the only Wooster runner to gain positive yardage.
The loss sets the Lords' records back to 1-8 overall and 1-7 in the NCAC. The Kenyon men will finish off the 2014 season at home next week against Denison University. Wooster improved to 4-5 overall and 4-4 in the NCAC. The Fighting Scots finish off their season next weekend at Ohio Wesleyan University.
Brandon January had 114 rushing yards Saturday, but the Lords ended up on the wrong side of a
21-7 final score at The College of Wooster.
