NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. – Charlie Wallander led five Westminster College players in double-figure scoring to lead the Titans to a 93-81 win over Kenyon College Saturday night in the 23rd annual Buzz Ridl Classic.
Wallander was 9-of-13 (69.2%) from the field and hit eight of his 10 free throw attempts to go along with seven rebounds and three assists. Deontay Scott came off the bench and totaled 20 points on 9-of-9 shooting. Scott grabbed seven boards as well.
The Lords were led by
Tim Connolly's 24 points on 8-of-16 shooting.
Cooper Handelsman added 16 points, a team-high seven rebounds and collected a pair of steals.
In the first half, Westminster shot 57.1% (20-35) en route to a 50-43 halftime lead. About eight minutes into the game, the Titans found themselves up by seven (24-17) following a Wallander layup. The Lords responded though with a 16-3 run over the next four minutes.
Brien Comey's free throw with 8:39 left in the half brought the score to 33-27, Kenyon.
That six-point advantage for the Lords slipped away though as Wallander's two free throws with just under six minutes remaining gave Westminster a 37-36 lead. The Titans kept the lead all the way to halftime.
Trailing by seven to start the second half, Connolly's layup 43 seconds in pulled the Lords to within three (50-47). But Kenyon didn't get any closer the rest of the way.
The Titans squashed any hope of the Lords retaking the lead over the next five minutes on a 14-6 run. Scott's jumper with 14:25 left in the game gave Westminster its biggest lead at the time (64-53).
Kenyon pulled to within seven points a pair of times but didn't get any closer as Westminster's lead grew to as many as 17 points.
As a team, the Titans shot 54.8% from the field and were 21-of-29 (72.4%) from the foul line. They also outscored the Lords 44-22 in the paint. Kenyon was able to convert 12 Westminster turnovers into 15 points and had a 24-19 lead in second-chance points.
The Lords return to action November 16 when they face Thiel College at 2 p.m. to wrap up the Buzz Ridl Classic.
