GAMBIER, Ohio – Kenyon College had no trouble getting by Heidelberg University in the first round of the NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Tournament Saturday afternoon at Mavec Field. The sixth-ranked Lords advanced with a 3-0 win in front of a packed home crowd.
It was the second match-up between the two teams this season. The Lords previously defeated the Student Princes 2-1 back in September.
Kenyon had several good looks early in the first half before
Dalton Eudy broke the scoreless tie. In the 20th minute, Eudy took a pass from
Josh Lee near the right side of the 18-yard box and finished to put the home team up 1-0.
Five minutes later,
Cameron Scott delivered a pass that only
Grant Carney could get and the 6-foot-3 senior from Charlotte, N.C. headed a shot into the right corner of the net.
The Student Princes had just one shot on goal which came in the 10th minute from Christopher Koczak.
The 2-0 Kenyon lead would remain throughout the second half until Heidelberg threatened late. Kyle Boone headed a shot in the 84th minute before Alexis Mendoza shot in the 89th minute. Unfortunately for the Student Princes, both attempts were saved by
Sam Clougher who notched his 14 shutout of the season.
Oliver Wynn added another goal for good measure for the Lords with 19 seconds remaining on an assist from Carney.
Kenyon out-shot Heidelberg 20-10 and held an 8-5 advantage in corners.
The Lords' next opponent is Thomas More College who defeated North Park University 3-2 in double overtime. That match is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. November 16 at Mavec Field.
Ticket prices are $7 for adults, $5 for students without school ID, and $3 for children 18 and under. Students carrying an ID from a competing NCAA Institution will be admitted free of charge.
