RICHMOND, In. – The Kenyon College Lords basketball team won its final contest of 2014 with a 79-63 victory over Earlham College today in a non-conference game at the Athletics and Wellness Center.
Four different Lords scored in double-figures as the team was led by
Cooper Handelsman's 19. He hit 11-of-12 from the charity stripe.
Tim Connolly added 18 points while
Connor Garrity tallied a season-high 13.
Alexander Powell chipped in with 10 points.
Taylen Alexander hit 3-of-4 from downtown and scored 15 to lead the Quakers. Freshman Elijah Wilson-Thomas added 14 points and Kyle Smith rounded out Earlham's double-figure scoring efforts with 12.
Earlham held a slim 19-16 advantage after a Smith layup with a little over 10 minutes remaining in the first half before Kenyon got into a groove. The Lords reeled off eight straight points to take a 28-21 lead with 4:40 left as Handelsman capped off the run with a pair of free throws.
The Quakers got to within two points (35-33) with 15 seconds remaining but Powell drained a three-pointer with one second left to bring the halftime score to 38-33 in favor of the visitors.
In the second half, Handelsman gave the Lords their first double-digit advantage (43-33) a little over two minutes in. But the Quakers responded.
A 16-4 run highlighted by four made three-pointers from Earlham erased the 10-point deficit and gave the Quakers a 49-47 lead with 12:35 left.
The massive run didn't faze the Lords though who would retake the lead for good on a Garrity three-pointer with 9:33 left.
Kenyon's lead grew the rest of the game until the final tally, 79-63.
The Lords were outstanding at the free throw line hitting 27-of-32 (84.4%) and converted 27 Earlham turnovers into 31 points. Kenyon also held a 28-16 advantage in points in the paint.
Next up for Kenyon is a trip to Baltimore to play in the Johns Hopkins University Blue Jay Invitational. The Lords will play the host school January 2 at 8 p.m.
