Ladies battle, but can’t gain win in home tri-match

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 4099GAMBIER, Ohio – Playing at home in Tomsich Arena for the first time this season, the Kenyon College volleyball team gave squads from Hiram College and Otterbein University all they could handle Saturday. The Ladies took a set from Hiram before falling 25-10, 22-25, 25-17, 25-14, and then took Otterbein to the brink in a 19-25, 25-13, 18-25, 25-16, 16-14 loss.

While the final results were not quite what the young Kenyon team had in mind, the Ladies could take solace in the fact that they played up to tough competition. Hiram, which also defeated Otterbein in four sets, left the premises with a 12-1 record while Otterbein moved its record to 7-8 with the Saturday split. Kenyon and Otterbein played earlier in the season and the Cardinals dealt the Ladies a swift 3-0 defeat.

Against the Cardinals this time around, the Ladies claimed the first and the third set. Otterbein charged back with a convincing win in the fourth set and sent the game into the deciding 15-point final set.  The Ladies again got behind, but turned a 9-6 deficit into a 10-9 lead with freshman Jensen Shurbert serving. The teams then tied thing up at 11, 13, and 14, before Otterbein nailed down the last two points of the match and escaped with the victory.

Shurbert ended up doing a little bit of everything for the Ladies. She had eight kills, 15 assists, and five digs against the Cardinals. Senior Hannah Shank added 16 assists and 10 digs, while freshman Tierney McClure and senior Amber Krause chipped in with seven and six kills, respectively. Freshman Lauren Kerr also had six kills and her classmate, Rachael Thorson added a dozen digs to the Kenyon total.

The match earlier in the day against Hiram was not as tight, but the Ladies freshman class led the way once again. McClure threw down ten kills, while Kerr notched a team-high 13. McClure also had 14 digs and Thorson added 15 more.

The Ladies, now 2-12, will play next at Muskingum University. They'll take on the Fighting Muskies at 7 p.m. Thursday, September 25.
