GREENCASTLE, Ind. – The end of a month-long road trip did not go the way the Kenyon College men's basketball team imagined. Saturday at DePauw University, the visiting Lords were locked in a defensive battle that saw the host Tigers defend home court with a 53-37 North Coast Athletic Conference victory.
With the loss, Kenyon (4-9, 2-4 NCAC), which has not played a home game since December 12, completed its extended road trip with a 1-4 mark. The Lords will be more than happy to return to Tomsich Arena on Wednesday, when they host rival Denison University and start a swing that has them playing five of their next seven games at home.
Although Kenyon ended up on the wrong side of the final score, neither team did anything eye-opening in the offensive zone. The Lords shot just 14-of-43 (32.6 percent) and gave away a season-high 22 turnovers. DePauw (10-3, 3-3 NCAC) shot only 16-of-46 (34.8 percent), including a forgettable 1-of-17 showing (5.9 percent) from behind the three-point line.
DePauw may have been staring at an upset if it weren't for sophomore guard Luke Lattner, who scored a game-high 20 points on 7-of-12 shooting from the floor and a perfect 5-of-5 at the line. Without him, the rest of the Tigers shot just 9-of-34 (26.5 percent). Tommy Fernitz added 12 points and 10 rebounds and was one of just five players who recorded points for DePauw.
Kenyon had nine players score at least two points, but none tallied more than eight, a total that senior guard
Cooper Handelsman reached to lead the team. Fellow guard
Tim Connolly added seven points and center
Brien Comey tossed in six for Kenyon. On the glass, senior
Dan Voigt led the Lords with six rebounds. Connolly added five rebounds, and along with Handelsman, registered two assists.
DePauw made all the difference in points off turnovers and points in the paint. The Tigers used Kenyon's 22 turnovers to generate 27 points. In the paint, the Tigers outscored Kenyon 30-16.
Despite the final outcome, the Lords did start the game on a positive note. They held the Tigers to just one field goal during the game's first ten minutes and built leads of 13-3 and 21-5. Unfortunately for the Lords, when
Alexander Powell hit a three-pointer to make it 21-5 with 7:31 left in the first half, it marked the end of first-half scoring for the Purple and White. DePauw rallied over those last seven minutes of the half to score 19 points and headed into the half with a slim 24-21 lead.
Although Kenyon tied the game at 27-27 early in the second half, the Lords never regained the lead. DePauw forged ahead by as many as 19 points and outscored Kenyon 29-16 over the game's final 20 minutes.
Tim Connolly returned from injury Saturday to score seven points and grab five rebounds, but the Lords
wound up on the short side of a 53-37 final score at DePauw University.
