Shooting woes cost Ladies in loss to Wittenberg

GAMBIER, Ohio – Wittenberg University (13-5, 5-3 NCAC) held Kenyon College (5-11, 3-5 NCAC) to its lowest first-half shooting percentage total of the season en route to a 49-39 North Coast Athletic Conference victory Wednesday night at Tomsich Arena.

The Tigers clamped down on the Ladies' offense in the first half holding them to just 17.2 percent shooting (5-of-29).

Wittenberg was led by Bobbie Clayton's 13 points and seven rebounds off the bench. Darbie Zirkle recorded a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds while teammate Katelyn Haralamos contributed nine points, grabbed eight rebounds, dished out a game-high four assists and recorded two steals.

Bailey Dominguez and Griffin Tullis led Kenyon with eight points apiece. Tullis also added three steals and two blocks. Lauren Kriete chipped in with seven points and five rebounds while Sarah Hobbs and Avery Anderson each tallied six points.

With the score tied at six about seven minutes into the game, the Tigers went on a 9-0 run to seize control. Clayton scored the first four points of that stretch before Heather Schroeder capped off the spurt with a layup. The Ladies missed eight shots during that span.

Wittenberg saw its lead dwindle to four points (17-13) following a three-pointer from Dominguez with 6:22 left, but the Tigers found another run to go up for good. Over the last six minutes and change, the Tigers scored 12 of the next 14 points to go into halftime leading 29-15.

In the second half, Kenyon wasn't able to pull the game within single digits as Wittenberg led by as many as 15 points on a pair of occasions.

The Tigers' bench was able to help its team's cause outscoring the Ladies' bench 19-4. Wittenberg also had a 13-2 second-chance points advantage and out-rebounded Kenyon 44-31.

Kenyon will look to get back into the win column January 24 when Hiram College (4-13, 0-8 NCAC) visits Tomsich for a 1 p.m. NCAC contest.
