GAMBIER, Ohio – The trio of
Avery Anderson,
Griffin Tullis, and
Bailey Dominguez scored 48 points and set the offensive tone Saturday at Tomsich Arena, where the Kenyon College women's basketball team defeated the Hiram College Terriers, 67-51. The win was the Ladies' third in their last four games and it completed the season sweep of the Terriers.
Throughout the game, Kenyon (6-11, 4-5 NCAC) displayed excellent ball movement, getting plenty of open looks for its trio of hot hands. The Ladies wound up with a total of 16 assists and posted a season-best .446 shooting percentage (25-of-56). The open offense left room for Anderson, a senior, to match her career-high of 16 points. It also allowed Dominguez and Tullis to established new career-highs of 17 and 15 points, respectively.
Dominguez was 6-of-11 overall, including a 4-of-8 showing from three-point land. Anderson and Tullis were both 6-of-10 from the floor. Additionally, Anderson was 3-of-4 at the free throw line, but saw her streak of 19 consecutive free throws made come to an end. That stretch started against Hiram back on December 6. For the season, Anderson is 26-of-30 at the free throw stripe (86.7 percent).
The Ladies' offense didn't break loose right away. Hiram stayed within five points for most of the first half. At the 5:52 mark, however, things started to kick in as Anderson drove the lane twice and earned a couple of trips to the line. She then answered a Hiram three-pointer with a layup that gave Kenyon a 24-17 lead with 3:34 left in the half. Baskets from Tullis and
Shelby Gray lifted the Ladies into halftime with a 30-19 lead.
The Kenyon defense allowed just five first-half field goals to the Terriers, who shot 5-of-28 (17.9 percent) in those first 20 minutes. Things didn't get a whole lot better in the second half. The Terriers (4-14, 0-9 NCAC) finished the game 18-of-67 (26.9 percent) overall and that included a 4-of-24 (16.7 percent) showing from outside the arc. Kayla Yost and Mercedes Jones led the team with 11 points apiece.
Kenyon fared much better from long range and on the boards, too. As a team, the Ladies fired three-pointers at a .333 clip (7-of-21) and cleaned off the glass to the tune of a 57-31 advantage. Senior
Sarah Hobbs, who did not record a point, contributed 11 rebounds and five assists. Freshman
Ifeoma Archimalo added seven more Kenyon rebounds and Dominguez grabbed six.
The Ladies will try to keep momentum going into their next game which is slated for 6 p.m. at Oberlin College. The Yeowomen (10-8, 6-3 NCAC) were 76-74 winners at Allegheny College on Saturday.
Senior Avery Anderson tied her career-best, scoring 16 points in the Ladies' 67-51 win over Hiram.
