OBERLIN, Ohio – For the first nine minutes of Wednesday's conference contest at Oberlin College, the Kenyon College women's basketball team held the host Yeowomen to just one field goal. The tables turned quickly, however, as Oberlin answered with a 24-4 run en route to a 59-46 victory at Philips Gym.
The Kenyon loss spoiled an outstanding individual effort from senior
Avery Anderson, who tossed in a career-high 20 points on 10-of-16 shooting. Her previous high was 16 points, a mark she first registered last year and then hit again in last week's win over Hiram College. Fellow senior
Lauren Kriete chipped in with 10 more Kenyon points, making the senior duo responsible for 65 percent of the Ladies' offense. No other Kenyon player scored more than five points.
The Ladies jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead after the first five minutes of play and then improved the lead to 12-2 and 15-5. It wasn't until the 10:28 mark that Oberlin converted its second field goal of the game. It turned out to be a three-pointer from Caroline Hamilton that sparked a massive Yeowomen run.
During the momentum swing, Oberlin's Christina Marquette drained back-to-back three-pointers that pushed the Yeowomen ahead 16-15 with roughly eight minutes left in the half. Two buckets from Anderson pulled the Ladies within two points (21-19), but Marquette and Hamilton continued to pour it on and steered their Oberlin team into the break with a 29-19 cushion.
Anderson and Kriete scored the first two baskets of the second half. At that point, the Ladies trailed by just six (29-23), but that would be as close as they would get for the remainder of the game. The combination of Marquette and Hamilton proved too much to overcome. Marquette finished the game with 20 points and 18 rebounds. Hamilton added 14 points and Lindsey Bernhardt rounded out the Yeowomen's double-digit scorers with 11.
Neither team shot very well, but the Yeowomen made up for it at the free throw line where they went 19-of-22. Kenyon was just 2-of-5 at the stripe.
The loss dropped Kenyon's records to 6-12 overall and 4-6 in the North Coast Athletic Conference. Oberlin, which now owns an all-time record of 20-59 against Kenyon, improved to 11-8 overall and 7-3 in conference competition this season.
