WOOSTER, Ohio – Guided by 6-7 center Dan Fanelly, the No. 14-ranked Fighting Scots from The College of Wooster shot 50 percent from the floor Wednesday night and ran their win streak to seven games after posting a 77-63 North Coast Athletic Conference win over the Kenyon College Lords.
Fanelly, who averages about 15 points and seven rebounds per game, scored 17 points and grabbed 15 rebounds against Kenyon. He used his big frame to dominate the lane and deliver a 6-of-9 shooting performance from the floor and a 4-of-5 showing at the free throw line.
If Fanelly wasn't enough for Kenyon to deal with, the Scots unleashed guard Xavier Brown and forward Evan Pannell. Both rang up 23 points. Brown needed 15 shots to get to his total, but Pannell was nearly perfect, shooting 7-of-7 from the floor, including a pair of three-pointers, and 7-of-9 at the free throw stripe.
Wooster's huge size advantage was not only apparent in the scoring department, but on the boards. Led by Fanelly, the Scots out-rebounded the Lords, 45-32.
The Lords tried to keep pace by launching the long ball. They connected on 9-of-15 three-point attempts (60.0 percent), but that rate did not translate to the rest of the floor. Overall, the Lords were 22-of-61 (36.1 percent) and 10-of-19 (52.6 percent) at the charity stripe.
Wooster (10-2, 4-1 NCAC) jumped out to early leads of 14-7 and 21-9 and never looked back. An
Alexander Powell three-ball at the 6:12 mark of the first half pulled the Lords within six points, but they would never get any closer. The Fighting Scots went into halftime with a 39-30 advantage and pushed the lead out to as many as 23 points in the second half.
Senior guard
Jonathan Amador led Kenyon (4-8, 2-3 NCAC) in scoring. He was 4-of-6 from behind the three-point arc, scored 17 points, and served up four assists. His backcourt classmate,
Cooper Handelsman, scored 10 points and registered a team-high five assists. In the paint, center
Brien Comey did his best to keep up with Wooster by scoring seven points and grabbing eight rebounds. Additionally,
Tyler Kimble came off the bench to hit a pair of three-pointers and ended the game with eight points.
Kenyon (4-8, 2-3 NCAC) continues its rough road trip Saturday with a 3:00 p.m. game at DePauw University. The Tigers are 9-3 and winners of four in a row.
