GAMBIER, Ohio – Oberlin College (6-7, 2-2 NCAC) used an explosive first half from beyond the three-point line to help its cause in a 56-40 victory over Kenyon College (3-9, 1-3 NCAC) Wednesday night at Tomsich Arena in a North Coast Athletic Conference women's basketball game.
The Yeowomen hit 8-of-13 (61.5%) from distance to help build a 21-point halftime lead over the Ladies.
Christina Marquette led all scorers with 18 points and also grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds. Lindsey Bernhardt added 17 points for Oberlin.
Kenyon was led by
Avery Anderson's season-high 15 points on 7-of-11 shooting.
Sarah Hobbs and
Sidney Cera each contributed seven points. Hobbs also corralled a team-high eight rebounds.
In the first half, Kenyon held an 11-9 advantage after Anderson's jumper with 13:58 remaining. Following that, however, it was all Oberlin.
Christina Marquette ignited a 17-2 run with a three-pointer to push Oberlin ahead 12-11. The Yeowomen hit a total of 4 three-pointers during that stretch and took a 26-13 lead with just under eight minutes left after a Caroline Hamilton shot from beyond the arc.
The Ladies pulled to within 10 after a Hobbs three-ball, but it was the closest they got the rest of the game. Oberlin took a 37-16 lead into the break.
By the end of the first half, the Yeowomen had shot 56% from the field including a 61.5% clip from downtown. On the flip side for the Ladies, they were only able to shoot 25% (7-of-28).
In the second half, Oberlin maintained its double-digit lead throughout. Anderson's free throw with about 1:40 left of the clock brought the score to 53-40 but Kenyon didn't get any closer.
Kenyon shot a season-low 11.5% from the three-point line. The Ladies did, however, have a 20-12 points in the paint advantage.
Next up for Kenyon is a trip to DePauw University (12-1, 5-0 NCAC) for a 1 p.m. NCAC matchup.
