GREENCASTLE, Ind. – For the first time since September 6, the Kenyon College Ladies field hockey team lost a game. Saturday at DePauw University, the Ladies saw their win streak halted at 11 games as the host Tigers turned up the defensive pressure and cranked out 3-0 win.
It was just the second loss of the year for Kenyon (13-2, 10-1 NCAC) and the first in North Coast Athletic Conference competition. The Ladies' win streak was just one win shy of tying last year's best string of a dozen consecutive wins. Additionally, the loss was Kenyon's first to a conference opponent since September 27, 2014—a span of 20 games.
DePauw (11-1, 10-1 NCAC) used the victory to jump back into the picture at the top of the NCAC standings, where its shares the No. 1 spot with the Ladies. Earlier this season, Kenyon defeated DePauw, 1-0, at McBride Field. Denison (10-6, 8-3 NCAC) holds the third spot in the standings and will play against DePauw on Sunday.
The Tigers managed to lock up the Ladies with stout defensive play. Kenyon uncharacteristically did not get off its first shot until the game's 48th minute. The Ladies actually unleashed three shots off a penalty corner at that time, but all three were saved by DePauw goalkeeper Sarah Guendert, who wound up making a total of six saves to earn the shutout.
While the Ladies struggled to find the back of the cage, DePauw picked up the only goal it would need about mid-way through the first half. Natalie Abbott scored off an assist from Grace Goodbarn to put the Tigers ahead. The score stayed that way through halftime.
In the second half, Paige Berliner, the conference's leading scorer, tacked on two insurance goals for DePauw, a team that has now won six in a row since last losing to Kenyon on September 27.
The Ladies, who were outshot 15-10, will remain in Indiana overnight and will try to turn things around Sunday with a noon battle against the Quakers of Earlham College.
Kenyon's 11-game win streak came to an end Saturday after the Ladies suffered a 3-0 defeat at DePauw University.
