RICHMOND, Ind. -- The Kenyon College Ladies basketball team withstood a furious late Earlham College comeback to win in dramatic fashion Saturday.
Bailey Dominguez hit a three-pointer with 0.3 left on the clock and sent the Ladies to a 65-64 victory in the title game of the four-team 2015 Quaker Tournament.
After getting an inbounds pass with 6.9 seconds to go, junior guard
Sidney Cera took the ball to the top of the key and passed to Dominguez. Dominguez circled to the left side and, while closely guarded, fired a shot just beyond the arc that went in.
Kenyon, 3-0 for the first time since the 2009-10 season, led by seven with 3:20 to play before the Quakers made their move. Earlham went on a 10-1 run in the final minutes, capped by a layup from Hannah Franklin with 6.9 seconds to go.
The Ladies called timeout after Franklin's layup and used the new NCAA rule that allowed them to inbound the ball at their own end of the court, where Cera took control and picked up her team-high fifth and final assist of the game.
Dominguez finished with a team-high 16 points, going 6-for-14 from the field, including 4-for-9 from three-point range. The Ladies, as a team, were excellent from long range, going 8-for-18 (44.4 percent). Kenyon is now 20-for-55 (36.4 percent) from three-point land on the season.
Ifeoma Archimalo had a double-double for the Ladies, finishing with 11 points and 11 boards.
Jessica Gerber had nine points, while
Miranda Diesz and
Griffin Tullis each contributed eight points.
Franklin led the Quakers with 16 points. Kasin Spay had 14 points and Maya Luney scored 10.
The two teams traded off the lead until the seven-minute mark in the second quarter. That's when Earlham (1-2) began a 12-4 run to take a 24-20 lead late in the quarter. Earlham continued to lead in the third quarter, but a Dominguez three-pointer with 8:46 to go tied the game at 28 all. That shot launched a 9-0 run that ultimately kept Kenyon in the lead until late.
Kenyon led, 45-42, at the end of the third quarter. Earlham narrowed the Ladies' lead to one, but never captured the lead itself until the final seconds.
At the end of the game, Archimalo and Dominguez were selected to the All-Tournament Team. Archimalo, who had a combined 24 points and 19 rebounds in the two tournament games, was named MVP.
