Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Lords struggle to keep pace with Terriers

GAMBIER, Ohio – The Hiram College Terriers constantly pushed the tempo of Saturday's basketball game with the host Kenyon College Lords. The result was a more productive Hiram offense, but not necessarily a more efficient one, that just kept shooting until it registered an 88-78 North Coast Athletic Conference victory.

Hiram (4-2, 1-1 NCAC) jacked up a total of 73 shots, compared to 58 for Kenyon. There were many points throughout the game, including at the break, in which the Terriers had put up 20 more shots than the Lords (2-4, 1-1 NCAC).

When the smoke settled, Hiram ended up 30-of-73 from the floor (41.1 percent), including a 10-of-27 showing from three-point range (37.0 percent). Kenyon was 27-of-58 (46.6 percent) overall and 2-of-10 (20.0 percent) from long range.

No one on the floor took more shots than Hiram senior guard J.J. Woodson, who was 9-of-24 and scored a game-high 25 points. He took nearly as many shots as Kenyon's top-two scorers combined. Senior center Brien Comey led the Lords offense with 19 points on 8-of-15 shooting, while senior guard Tim Connolly followed up with 14 points on 4-of-13 shooting.

Comey and the Lords owned the paint for most of the game, but Hiram was moving so quickly it didn't matter. The Terriers outscored Kenyon 16-2 in fast-break situations and overwhelmed the Lords, 26-5, in points off of turnovers.

Although Kenyon's 22 turnovers against Hiram were not a season high, the miscues have been an early-season problem for the Lords, who now average 17.3 turnovers per contest.

Kenyon's only lead in this game came early at 3-2, but the Lords did manage to tie things up at 31 and 33. Over the last two minutes of the first half, Hiram broke open the tie with a 10-5 run and got to halftime with a 43-28 advantage. Woodson carried the Terriers through that first half, scoring 19 points and grabbing eight rebounds.

The Lord started the second half the way they wanted with inside hoops from Comey and Chris Link that cut the Hiram lead down to four. That, however, would be as close as Kenyon would get the rest of the way. The Terriers broke off a 9-3 run, extended the lead to ten and never looked back.

Hiram's Paul Ortiz and Austen Rekolt each scored 12 in the second half, helping lift the Terriers to a margin as large as 13 points with roughly four minutes left in the game. Ortiz finished with 17 and Rekolt stopped at 12. Ray Gaston added 13 to round out the Terriers' double-digit scorers.

Comey nearly had a double-double as he complemented his 19 points with nine rebounds. He also had three blocked shots. Junior Ethan Shapiro tossed in 10 points off the bench for the Lords and freshman Matt Shirfin added nine points on a perfect shooting night from the floor and the line.

Kenyon will try to snap its brief two-game skid Tuesday when it hosts Allegheny College in another conference contest that will get underway at 7:30 p.m.
