GRANVILLE, Ohio – With 3:41 remaining in Wednesday night's game, the Kenyon College women's basketball team held a seven-point lead and was on the cusp of claiming its first season sweep of Denison University since the 2007-08 campaign. The Big Red, however, had other plans and closed out the game on an 11-0 run to escape with a 43-39 win at Livingston Gymnasium.
Denison (12-11, 8-6 NCAC) started its run with two free throws from Alyx Ingram at the 2:29 mark. Kenyon missed its next shot and the Big Red followed up with a three-pointer from Kellie Arter, who was previously 0-for-8. The Ladies again came away with nothing on their next trip down the floor and Denison responded with a close-range jumper from Jordan Holmes. That knotted the game at 39-39 with 1:21 showing on the clock.
Kenyon (6-15, 4-9 NCAC) misfired twice more in its own end and Denison sealed the victory with a pair of free throws from Holmes and a final field goal from Ingram, who scored all four of her points in those last three minutes. Prior to that final run, which saw the Big Red go 3-of-5 from the floor and 4-of-4 at the free throw line, the host squad shot just 23.7 percent (9-of-38).
Aside from those final three fatal minutes, the Ladies defense couldn't have done much better. Overall, Kenyon held Denison to 27.9 percent shooting (12-of-43), forced 20 turnovers, including eight steals, and blocked three shots. The Big Red had just three field goals in the first half.
Despite shooting so poorly, Denison stayed afloat at the free throw line, where it went 15-of-22 for the game. Kenyon, on the other hand, didn't gain many opportunities at the line and shot just 4-of-11 when it was afforded chances.
Only one player, Gabrielle Nottage, scored in double figures. The Denison sophomore had 11 points on a 3-of-12 shooting performance from the floor and a 4-of-4 showing at the line. Holmes added eight points and yanked down 18 rebounds, nearly half of the Big Red's final total.
Kenyon, which owned a 17-15 halftime lead and moved ahead by as many as a dozen points in the second half, was led in scoring by
Sidney Cera and
Sarah Hobbs. Both players tallied seven points.
Lauren Kriete added six points, while
Avery Anderson matched that total and also grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.
With three games left in the regular season, the Ladies sit in seventh place in the conference standings. They'll next take on No. 8-ranked DePauw Saturday at 1 p.m. in Tomsich Arena.
Sophomore guard Sidney Cera had seven points in the Ladies' 43-39 loss at Denison on Wednesday night.
