GAMBIER, Ohio – The Kenyon College Lords lacrosse team scored six fourth-quarter goals, including the last five, and stunned the visiting Adrian College Bulldogs, who twice held four-goal leads Wednesday at McBride Field. Senior
Fritz Waine fired in the game-winner with 2:26 left on the clock and lifted the Lords to an amazing 13-12 victory.
Adrian (3-1) dominated play in the second and third quarters and then scored two of the fourth quarter's first three goals. That gave the Bulldogs a 12-8 advantage with 9:08 remaining in the game. The news looked even worse for Kenyon (3-2) one minute later when it appeared Adrian had scored again. A Kenyon penalty, however, followed by the officials' confusion regarding possession, wiped the Adrian goal off the board.
Kenyon eventually killed off the penalty and then went to work on offense. Freshman
J.T. Meyer ignited the Lords' rally with a goal and then an assist on a man-up goal scored by sophomore
Robert Jacobs. Less than a minute later, the Lords marched right back down the field and Waine fired in a goal off an assist from freshman
Pierce Kraft.
As the clock ticked under five minutes, Kenyon collected another face-off win and let loose with three more shots, all missing their intended target. The teams quickly traded possession in the Kenyon zone before the Lords fired off three more shots. The third of those three was off the stick of senior
Nick Lenard and tied the game at 12-12 with 3:04 still left to play.
As with the previous face-off, Kenyon's
Rory Shoemaker claimed the win with
Jack Fraser scooping up the ground ball. The Lords advanced quickly and got the ball to Waine, who netted the game-winner.
Adrian had one final shot at tying the game back up, but an attempt from Eric Fannell with 17 seconds left was saved by Kenyon keeper
Patrick Shevelson, who wound up making seven stops for the game.
It was a streaky contest that saw Kenyon go up 5-2 early in the second quarter, only to have to Adrian take control of play for the next 30 minutes and Kenyon close things out with a remarkable rally.
Jacobs led the Lords' offense with five points on three goals and two assists. Waine, Lenard, and
Alec Foresta all had two goals each for Kenyon, which is now 3-0 at McBride Field. Meyer, Kraft,
Alex Lopez and
Justin Coleman accounted for the other Kenyon scores. Fraser corralled a game-high eight groundballs, while Jacobs and
Jack Vallis each scooped up six.
The Lords have another home game on tap. They'll host the DePauw University Tigers at 1 p.m. Saturday in the first North Coast Athletic Conference contest of the season.
Senior Fritz Waine scored two of Kenyon's six fourth-quarter goals, including the game-winner,
to rally the Lords to a 13-12 victory against Adrian College at McBride Field.
