MARIETTA, Ohio – The Kenyon College Ladies (19-3) extended their program-best winning streak to 15 games with a doubleheader sweep against the Marietta College Pioneers Sunday afternoon in a non-conference softball contest.
Kenyon got some timely hits and defensive stops in the 4-2 game-one win before dominating game two and winning 8-1.
GAME ONE
The Ladies jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning as
Maddy Stark homered to left field and
Jane Ghublikian crossed home after a wild pitch.
Marietta cut into that deficit in the bottom half of the inning as Courtney Kerwood doubled to left field driving in Cierra Bloom.
With a 2-1 advantage, the Ladies maintained that lead even during some tough spots. One of those spots came in the bottom of the fourth. A lead-off triple from Kaitlin Klinchock had the Pioneers thinking they may at least tie the game. But Stark didn't allow it. The senior pitcher retired the next three Marietta batters and allowed Kenyon to hold its 2-1 lead.
After the defensive stop, the Kenyon bats responded in the fifth.
Chelsea Delaney smacked a one-out double to center field scoring
Madi Maldonado and in the next at-bat,
Lindsey Susolik connected with a run-scoring single. That pushed the Ladies' lead to 4-1.
Marietta added its second run of the game in the sixth after a double from Ashlee Ireland drove in a runner. But the Pioneers didn't threaten after that.
Stark (9-2) tossed a complete game, struck out five, and allowed just one earned run. She and
Liz Paterra each collected two hits as well.
GAME TWO
Kenyon got all the run support it needed in the first en route to an 8-1 win. Delaney hit a two-run double and Susolik connected with a sacrifice fly to give the Ladies a 3-0 lead.
The Pioneers' lone run of the game came in the second inning as Rachel Montgomery drove in Ireland.
But after that, Kenyon turned up the heat.
The Ladies got a run in the fifth before scoring four more in the seventh. Ghublikian had an RBI double while Delaney, Susolik, and
Amanda Coyle had run-scoring singles.
Stark (10-2) pitched again for the Ladies and limited Marietta to just four hits while striking out six. She also tied for the team high with Delaney in hits with three.
Kenyon will now move onto North Coast Athletic Conference play when they host DePauw University March 28 at 1 p.m.
Maddy Stark led the Ladies with five hits including a home run Sunday at Marietta. The senior pitcher also
tossed both games and struck out 11 batters and allowed just two earned runs as Kenyon pushed its
program-record winning streak to 15 games.
