Kenyon splits pair of games at Gene Cusic Classic

FT. MYERS, Fla. – The Kenyon College Ladies softball team went 1-1 on Friday during the Gene Cusic Classic falling 6-4 to Olivet College and winning 5-2 over the Milwaukee School of Engineering. The split moved Kenyon's record to 5-3 to start the year.

GAME ONE

Olivet used a four-run fifth inning to rally from a 3-1 deficit against Kenyon.

Kenyon had gotten ahead early as Lindsey Susolik doubled down the left field line scoring Madi Maldonado in the third. The Ladies added their third run of the game in the fourth as a throwing error along the infield allowed Jane Ghublikian to score.

But in the bottom of the fifth, the Comets rallied.

Madison Spry's triple to right center cleared the bases and gave Olivet a 5-3 lead. They never lost it after that.

Kenyon made things interesting in the top of the seventh though. Trailing 6-3, the Ladies got the bases loaded with no one out. But after that, Comets pitcher Ashlynn Grubb retired the next three batters and secured a 6-4 win.

Susolik and Amanda Coyle each had two hits for the Ladies. Stark (2-2) tossed a complete game and fanned seven batters in the loss.

GAME TWO

Neither Milwaukee-Engineering nor Kenyon did anything through the first three innings as the scored remained tied at 0-0.

The Raiders got their only lead of the game in the fourth. MSOE pitcher Callie Wightman singled to right field driving in a run. And two batters later, Alex Cook singled bringing in Caitlyn Moran.

But Kenyon responded in the bottom of the fourth. After Ghublikian singled, Toni Miller reached on a fielder's choice and the attempt to force Ghublikian out at second resulted in an error allowing her to round all the way to home. Three batters later, Hayley Howard singled up the middle driving in Miller and Liz Paterra.

Kenyon added two more runs in the sixth on a two-run double from Maldonado.

Sylvie Thomas (3-1) earned the win for the Ladies tossing six innings, allowing six hits, struck out two, and induced nine flyouts and seven groundouts.

Paterra, Coyle, and Stark each collected a pair of hits for Kenyon.

Kenyon is back in action March 8 when they face Alverno College at 9 a.m. and follow that with an 11 a.m. contest versus University of Minnesota Morris.
