COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Kenyon College Lords lacrosse team ran into one of the top defensive units in the country Saturday at Patterson Field. The Lords did manage to net five goals against Ursinus College, but that total wasn't nearly enough as the host Bears lead wire-to-wire and chalked up a 12-5 victory.
Ursinus (3-0), a team that posted a 7.80 goals against average last season, yielded just two goals in each of its two previous games this season. With the win against the Lords, the Bears now sport a 3.00 goals against average.
Three different Ursinus players scored in the first quarter and gave the Bears a lead they would not relinquish. The Bears blitzed Kenyon with 19 shots in the first 15 minutes. Kenyon keeper
Patrick Shevelson did his best to keep the Lords in the game by making eight saves in the period and 17 throughout the contest.
Kenyon (2-2) got things turned around in the next two quarters, but they were unable to catch Ursinus. The Lords out-shot the Bears, 22-10, in the second and third quarters combined, however, the Bears scored four goals during that time and Kenyon managed only three.
Alex Lopez fired in the first Kenyon goal during a man-up situation with 12:00 showing on the second-quarter clock. In the third quarter, senior
Nick Lenard assisted on a
J.T. Meyer goal and then tossed in his own goal to get the Lords into the fourth quarter facing a 7-3 deficit.
The Lords inched even closer with a
Robert Jacobs' goal to start the final frame, but the Bears retaliated with four straight scores to seal the deal.
Although extra-man opportunities didn't decide the game, it was a physical contest that witnessed a total of 17 penalties. Kenyon was flagged nine times for 9:30, while Ursinus drew eight penalties for 7:00. Kenyon went 2-of-6 with the extra man and Ursinus was 3-of-7.
Overall, Ursinus held a 40-34 lead in shots taken and dominated face-offs, 14-7.
