Ladies earn road sweep at Ohio Wesleyan

DELAWARE, Ohio – The Kenyon College Ladies (23-7, 4-4 NCAC) softball team swept a North Coast Athletic Conference doubleheader over Ohio Wesleyan University Saturday afternoon at Margaret Sagan Field. With the pair of wins, Kenyon has now won 23 games, besting last year's total of 22 and setting a new standard for victories in a season.

GAME ONE

Through five innings of the opener between Kenyon and OWU, the Ladies looked primed to attain in easy conference win.

Maddy Stark allowed just one runner to get on base and didn't give up any hits.

Offensively, Kenyon jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first as senior Lindsey Susolik smacked a two-out homer to right field. After a pair of scoreless second and third innings, Nicole Horita drove in Emily Olson on a groundout RBI in the fourth to push the Kenyon lead to 3-0.

In the fifth, Kenyon extended its lead to 5-0 as Stark connected with a run-scoring double and Susolik brought home Stark on a single through the left side.

The good start from the Ladies was then put under pressure by the Battling Bishops in the home half of the sixth.

Chelsea Denman loaded the bases with a single to left center and two batters later, Taylor Dickson connected with a two-out double that plated two runners for OWU and brought the score to 5-2. The inning was capped off with a pair of infield errors that allowed two more to round home and moved the count to 5-4, Ladies.

Kenyon didn't allow any more runs after that and scored one more time in the top of the seventh on a Jane Ghublikian RBI double.

Susolik went 2-for-4 with three RBI while Stark added a pair of hits. Chelsea Delaney collected three hits.

GAME TWO

The Ladies started the second game of the doubleheader in good form claiming a 4-1 lead after two innings of play.

Delaney put a ball in play to shortstop in the top of the first which resulted in an error and allowed Ghublikian and Stark to score.

After OWU plated a run in the home half of the first, Kenyon scored twice more in the second as Ghublikian hit a two-out, two-run double to right center.

With a three-run advantage, Kenyon put the game away off the bat of Susolik in the fourth.  Ohio Wesleyan retired the first two batters of the inning before the Ladies struck.  A walk to Stark followed by a single from Ghublikian brought up Susolik up to bat and the Newport Beach, Calif., native smacked her second home run of the day down the left-field line and pushed Kenyon ahead 7-1.

The Battling Bishops managed just a pair of runs the rest of the way on homers from Lilly Gresh and Denman in the fourth and sixth innings, respectively.
