GAMBIER, Ohio - In a non-conference doubleheader headlined by Senior Day, the Kenyon College Lords baseball team used precise pitching to sweep the Cleary University Cougars to the tune of 5-3 and 1-0 wins Saturday afternoon at McCloskey Field.
Before the first pitch was thrown, seniors
Jake Dunn,
Mike Jeffers,
Kyle Hardacker,
Josh Jacobvitz and
Tim Krahn were all recognized for their hard work and achievements over the last four seasons. When things got underway, Dunn added to the special day by setting two Kenyon records. Within his first couple of plate appearances, he became Kenyon's career leader in at-bats (528) and total bases (305). He surpassed the previous records of 522 at-bats set by
Nate Lotze '14 and 300 total bases set by Jake Calcei '09.
Game one found itself scoring in spurts as each team needed just one inning to score all of its runs. The magic started for the Lords in the bottom of the first as Dunn scored from third on a wild pitch. Hardacker singled and advanced to second on a walk by
John Nahra. Sophomore
Phillip Nam then ripped a bases-clearing double to left center to give Kenyon the early lead, 3-0.
The very next batter, sophomore
Jono Chafe, made it a 4-0 game as his single to left scored Nam from second. Later in the inning, Chafe scored Kenyon's final run of the game on a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch absorbed by
Max Heldman.
The Cougars made it interesting in the third inning when Jack Ropp singled with Isaac Miller on third and Cameron Ciaciuch on first, but after Kenyon pitcher
Thomas Morris committed a throwing error, Ropp advanced to third base as Miller and Ciaciuch scored. Ropp later scored an unearned run on a wild pitch to make it 5-3.
While Kenyon couldn't pad its lead throughout the game, they let Morris do his work on the mound as he earned the pitching victory with two strikeouts and five hits over four and two-thirds innings pitched. After Jacobvitz retired four-straight batters in relief, junior
Spencer Byers earned the save as he sat down the side giving the Lords the win, 5-3.
In a pitchers' duel from two freshmen, Kenyon's
Jesse Bogacz and Cleary's Gunnar Gail stole the show in game two. Neither freshman allowed a single run. Gail struck out three and allowed six hits during his five innings pitched. His performance was exceeded by Bogacz, who answered with eight strikeouts and only gave up three hits over seven innings of work.
While both pitchers were fairly locked in, Bogacz found himself in trouble during the top of the sixth as a single by Devon Jones loaded the bases with only one out. The jam was then put to rest as Ropp was tagged out at home on James Edwards' fielder's choice and Joe Malewitz's fly-out to left.
With both games being scheduled for seven innings, the nightcap was still scoreless in the bottom of the eighth. Kenyon used a single and two walks to load the bases with only one out. Chafe then reached on a fielder's choice as von Roemer was thrown out at home. When Edwards, the Cougars catcher, tried to double-up Chafe at first his throw was well off target. The throwing error allowed Hardacker, who was on second base, to score the winning run.
The Lords will next be in action on Sunday morning at 11:00 a.m. as they attempt a weekend sweep of Cleary in a single nine-inning game from McCloskey Field.
