High emotions spark Lords to victory over Cleary

GAMBIER, Ohio – An ejection heading into the bottom of the seventh inning sparked Kenyon College (19-12) to a 7-4 win over Cleary University (17-22) in a non-conference baseball game at McCloskey Field Sunday morning.

Neither team had found a groove offensively leading up to the seventh.

The Lords' only run of the game up to that point came in the bottom of the second. Kenyon gained a 1-0 lead as Max Heldman singled up the middle scoring Jake Berry.

Cleary eventually responded in the fifth to tie it at 1 as Austin Forsythe connected with a two-out single to right field allowing Evan Gaddis to round home.

After a strikeout from Kenyon starter Tim Krahn closed the top half of the seventh, things got interesting.  Cleary's coach was thrown out for arguing and that got the Lords going.

Casey Rosenfeld and Heldman started the home half of the seventh reaching base and Matt Von Roemer followed with an RBI single up the middle. Following an intentional walk to Jake Dunn, senior Kyle Hardacker made the Cougars pay. The first pitch he saw he connected to left field scoring two. That pushed Kenyon's lead to 4-1 and they added one more as Cormac Jewell singled down the left-field line scoring Dunn.

The Cougars added two runs in the eighth and cut the score to 5-3 as Forsythe scored on a failed pickoff and Devon Jones hit a sacrifice fly to center field plating Dugan Roosa.

But Kenyon responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame and went ahead 7-3. And once again, it came off the bat of Hardacker. He drove in Dunn and Heldman with a shot to right center.

Cleary added one more run in the ninth before Spencer Byers came in to earn his team-leading sixth save of the year.

Hardacker led the Lords with four hits and four RBI while Heldman, Von Roemer, and Jewell each collected multiple hits.

Earning the win on the mound was Krahn (5-2) who tossed seven innings, scattered six hits, and struck out six.

Next up for the Lords is a home date against Wilmington College April 21 at 4 p.m.
