GAMBIER, Ohio – All the Kenyon College field hockey team needed Saturday was one shot and one goal. The Ladies actually had quite a few shots, but their one goal held up and the defense took care of the rest during a shutout victory over the visiting Centre College Colonels.
The goal came early on as Kenyon worked a penalty corner just a little more than five minutes into the game. Senior
Christine Bloom inserted the ball from the end line and senior
Maddie Breschi fired away, blasting her shot past Centre goalkeeper Lena Jewler. The goal was Breschi's fifth of the season and the assist was Bloom's first.
That was it for the offense. Kenyon did post a total of 18 shots and racked up 15 penalty corners throughout the game, but only Breschi was able to crack the cage. At the other end of the turf, Centre recorded four shots and three penalty corners. The Ladies now have taken 64 penalty corners in five games this season. Their opponents have combined for just 27.
The Colonels did apply pressure in the Kenyon zone on several different occasions, but the Ladies' defense yielded just two shots on goal. The starting back line of
Morgen Barroso,
Kelsey Trulik and
Paige Beyer did an excellent job of consistently thwarting Colonels' attacks.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Sarah Speroff was the beneficiary, as she had to make just two saves to notch her third shutout win of the season and the eighth of her young collegiate career. Her counterpart, Jewler, wasn't all that busy either. She had to make just four saves.
The non-conference win for the Ladies bumped their record to 4-1. Centre, which has yet to score a goal this season, dropped to 0-3 with the loss.
