GAMBIER, Ohio – A high-profile, early-season matchup between Carnegie Mellon University and Kenyon College didn't disappoint Saturday afternoon at a raucous Mavec Field. Down 2-1 heading into the second half, the Lords came back to win by a 4-3 count while remaining undefeated and earning a key early-season win against a formidable opponent.
The Tartans struck first in the match just six minutes in. William Webb's header went to the left post in the arms of Lords keeper
Sam Clougher, but the goalie found himself across the goal line.
It didn't take Kenyon long to respond though as
Tony Amolo struck three minutes later. A long ball was misplayed by the Tartans' goalie and Amolo retrieved the loose ball and fired into the net tying the match.
CMU added one more goal in the 16th minute as Webb sent a corner kick into the box and Ryan Stinebaugh headed it center post giving the Tartans a 2-1 lead.
That score remained the same before the Lords exploded in the second half.
A corner from
Jeremiah Barnes in the 69th minute sailed into the box and the 6-foot-1
Henry Myers leaped to head it home and tie the match.
Not even two minutes later,
Oliver Wynn delivered the go-ahead goal. With Amolo dribbling around the top of the box, he passed to an open Wynn who fired a laser from about 25 yards out.
Kenyon didn't relinquish the lead after that and even got a penalty kick goal from Amolo for good measure with two minutes left.
The Lords out-shout the Tartans 17-8 and held an 11-7 advantage in corner kicks.
Next up for Kenyon is a date with Marietta College tomorrow starting at 3 p.m. at Mavec Field.
