GAMBIER, Ohio – After Saturday's results were made final, Kenyon College senior
Maddie Breschi grabbed ownership of three offensive marks in the Ladies' field hockey record book. Breschi notched a goal and an assist while steering her squad to 5-0 North Coast Athletic Conference victory over the visiting Earlham College Quakers.
Breschi scored the first goal of the game simply by driving through the middle of the circle and firing away. That goal was her team-leading eighth of the season and the 44th of her career, which ties her with Rachel Hall '14 for the most career goals in Ladies' history.
About 16 minutes after that first goal, Breschi set up the next Kenyon score. Playing off a penalty corner, she shoveled a pass over to
Shannon Hart, who blasted a shot from the right wing into the opposite side of the cage. The assist for Breschi gave her the all-time career mark of 22, which surpassed the previous record of 21 career assists set by both Hall and Phoebe Walker '98.
That assist also gave Breschi 110 career points, another Kenyon record that was previous owned by Hall.
Before the half, it was freshman
Minke Verweij's turn to get in on the action. She corralled a ball in the middle of the Earlham defense, juked a defender, then spun, shot and scored what was her second goal of the season.
Sixty-six seconds into the second half, Hart scored again for Kenyon and again from the right side. That tally gave her two on the day and five for the season.
Finally, about four minutes after Hart's second goal,
Weezie Foster put a cap on the scoring. With her back to the goal, Foster out-worked an Earlham defender, turned, fired and rang up her fourth goal of the season.
As the score indicated, the Ladies' offense dominated the game. Kenyon out-shot Earlham 22-9 and worked for a 13-9 advantage in penalty corners.
Those are numbers Kenyon will have to keep up Sunday as it hosts DePauw University at noon. The Ladies will take a 7-1 overall record and a 4-0 NCAC mark into that contest, while DePauw will bring marks of 5-2 overall and 4-0 in the conference.
With Saturday's loss, Earlham fell to 3-4 overall and 2-3 in the NCAC.
