GAMBIER, Ohio – Just five matches into the season and the Kenyon College volleyball team has already accumulated half of its win total from all of last season. Tuesday, the host Ladies rang up win number three of the 2015 season after ambushing the visiting Wilmington College Quakers in straight sets, 25-15, 25-11, 25-13.
In the middle of a rebuilding process with second-year head coach
Amanda Krampf, the Ladies are now 3-2 and moved past the .500 mark for the first time since the 2011 season. Last season, Krampf's first at Kenyon, the Ladies finished with a 6-24 mark.
From the word go Tuesday, Kenyon took command of the match. Freshman
Alexi Donnelly served five straight points for Kenyon, which jumped out to a 6-2 lead. The spurt included two aces from Donnelly and two kills from sophomore
Tierney McClure.
When the Ladies went through a full rotation and it was Donnelly's turn to serve again, she and the Ladies rattled off six straight points, turning a tight 16-13 match into a comfortable 22-13 advantage. Donnelly ended up with four aces in the set. McClure put down four kills and freshman
Delaney Swanson had five kills.
In set two, Kenyon raced out to a 10-1 lead as Swanson and sophomore
Lauren Kerr piled up three blocks in the early going and sophomore
Rachael Thorson tacked on two aces. The Ladies needed only five kills in the second set, as Wilmington was charged with errors on nine different occasions.
In set three, Kenyon closed things out with authority. The Ladies bombed the Quakers with 15 kills and also tallied two more aces, giving them ten for the match. Swanson led the way in that final set with six kills, while freshman
Schuyler Stupica had three kills and two block assists.
Overall, Swanson had 11 kills and just one error in 24 attempts for a sparkling .417 attack percentage. She also had six digs and four block assists. McClure finished with six kills and sophomore setter
Jensen Shurbert led the Ladies with nine digs and 18 assists.
The big leads over Wilmington (0-3) allowed Krampf to empty her bench and find valuable playing time for 18 members of the team.
The Ladies will try to maintain their momentum Friday as they head to Cincinnati, Ohio for a match with The College of Mount Saint Joseph Lions.
Tierney McClure had six kills, two digs and two blocks Tuesday evening in the Ladies' 3-0 rout of the
Wilmington College Quakers. The match was the home-opener for the Ladies, who now sport a 3-2 record.
