GRANVILLE, Ohio – For the second straight contest, Kenyon College (6-8, 3-4 NCAC) went on a late run and this time knocked off Denison University 74-58 Wednesday night at Livingston Gymnasium. The Lords got a career-high 30 points from
Brien Comey and were aided by
Bennett Grigull's 12 points off the bench.
Offensively, Kenyon delivered a solid night shooting as they connected on 53.2% of its shots and about 77% from the free throw line.
Nearly 7:30 minutes into the first half, competition was close. A jumper from Denison's Max Siwik brought the count to 11-9 Lords. After that shot, Kenyon went on a 9-2 run and seized a 20-11 advantage following two free throws from senior
Tim Connolly.
The Big Red responded and cut the deficit to one (24-23) at the 3:28 mark after a Patrick Keller layup. Kenyon didn't panic though and closed the half with a 10-2 run and took a 34-25 lead into the locker room.
That close to the first half was a precursor of things to come for the Lords.
Second-half action saw Kenyon go up 12 points on a pair of occasions. The last time came just under 16 minutes left in the game as Comey scored off the right block moving the Lords' lead to 47-35.
After a really slow shooting performance for most of the affair, the Big Red battled back to threaten the Lords' lead.
DU clawed all the way back to bring the score to 60-58 after two free throws from Devon Pitts with 3:31 left.
Those free throws sparked the Lords to victory. Nursing just a two-point lead, Kenyon closed the game on a 14-0 run and shut out the Denison offense from the field (0-for-8). Comey came up big scoring 10 of those points for the visitors from Gambier.
Kenyon outscored Denison 36-24 in the paint and held a 9-2 second-chance points advantage by the end of the game.
Next up for the Lords is a trip to Wabash this Saturday for a 6 p.m. NCAC contest.
Brien Comey had his best night of his career scoring 30 points and grabbing 10 rebounds
as the Lords earned a road victory at Denison on Wednesday night.
