GRANVILLE, Ohio –
Bailey Dominguez scored 16 points and the Kenyon College women's basketball team forced 18 turnovers Wednesday, but those numbers didn't add up to a win for the Ladies, who pushed host Denison University to the edge in a 47-44 defeat.
The game gave Kenyon an opportunity to share the lead in the North Coast Athletic Conference standings. The result, however, knocked the Ladies (9-6, 3-3 NCAC) to fourth place, while Denison (12-3, 5-1 NCAC) maintained the top spot.
The Ladies continually pestered the Big Red and wound up keeping things close by scoring 18 points off of those 18 Denison turnovers. Meanwhile, Kenyon's ball handlers did an excellent job and committed only ten turnovers, tying a season-low.
The biggest problem for Kenyon was Jordan Holmes, Denison's junior center who entered the game ranked first in the nation in blocked shots (88) and rebounds per game (17.6). Kenyon defenders did manage to force Holmes into seven turnovers, but she still cranked out 18 rebounds, 10 points and six blocked shots.
The Ladies started the game with three one-point leads before extending their advantage to 10-7 with 2:40 left in the first quarter. That would end up being the Ladies' largest lead. Denison answered with a three-ball from Valesha Province, who knotted things up at 10-10.
In the second quarter, Denison's Emily Krumpe erupted for six points and sparked a Big Red run that pushed the home team into the break with a 26-18 advantage. Earlier in the quarter, a Kellie Arter three-pointer gave the Big Red its largest lead of the game at 11 points (24-13).
Kenyon used its own three-point attack in the third quarter to climb back within one point. Three free throws from
Sidney Cera were followed by a pair of three-point bombs from Dominguez and another from
Jessica Gerber. Denison survived the barrage, but later in the fourth quarter, one more trey from Dominguez ended up tying the game 40-40 with 5:29 showing on the clock.
The Ladies threatened down the stretch, but a missed free throw and two missed field goals in the game's final two minutes cost them a shot at upending the Big Red.
Dominguez's game-high 16 points were scored on 6-of-10 shooting, including a 4-of-7 showing from behind the three-point arc.
Ifeoma Archimalo had six points and a team-high seven rebounds, while Cera, Gerber and
Hannah O'Day all finished with five points.
Krumpe matched Holmes' ten-point output and Arter and Province each added nine points for Denison, which has won its last five games.
Kenyon will try to get back in the win column Saturday, when its hosts The College of Wooster in a conference contest slated to tip-off at 2 p.m.
Junior Bailey Dominguez scored 16 points Wednesday, but Denison outlasted Kenyon
to post a 47-44 North Coast Athletic Conference victory.
