WILMINGTON, Ohio – With junior
Charlotte Bussema leading the way, the Kenyon College women's basketball team exploded for 56 second-half points Sunday and registered a season-high for points scored during a 91-74 throttling of the Berea College Mountaineers in the consolation contest of Wilmington College's Fred Raizk Memorial Tournament.
Kenyon held a 35-29 lead at the half. Bussema, who played just one minute of that first half and didn't even take a shot, made all the difference in the second half. Her 19 points came in 18 minutes of work and she was 9-of-10 from the floor and 1-of-3 at the free throw line. Her final output was a career-best, surpassing her previous best of 12 points scored at Wittenberg University last year.
All 12 Kenyon players who logged playing time against Berea scored at least two points and all but one Kenyon player grabbed at least one rebound. Freshman
Sharon Hull poured in a season-high 13 points on 6-of-7 shooting, junior
Bailey Dominguez connected on a trio of three-pointers and scored 11 and freshman
Jessica Gerber rounded out the Ladies' double-digit scorers with ten points. Junior
Sidney Cera just missed joining that group as she scored nine points and dished out six assists.
One day ago, in a 65-61 loss to host Wilmington, the Ladies struggled with shooting accuracy and rebounding. Those problems were quickly corrected Sunday as the Ladies shot a season-best 63.8 percent (37-of-58) and posted a convincing 41-27 advantage on the boards against the Mountaineers.
The Ladies shot well from three-point range (9-of-15), too, but did most of their damage in the paint, where they outscored Berea 44-24. All nine of Bussema's field goals came in the paint.
With Berea trailing by just six points at the start of the second half and by just one point (40-39) at the 8:07 mark of the third quarter, the Ladies went on a game-changing run that commenced with a three-pointer from Dominguez. A minute later, an old-fashioned three-point play from Bussema put the Ladies up 48-39.
Berea (7-7) answered with a couple of field goals and a free throw, but Kenyon closed out the final five minutes of the third quarter on a 16-8 tear that pushed the Ladies into the final quarter of play with a comfortable 68-52 cushion. Both Bussema and freshman
Hannah O'Day had six points in the Kenyon outburst.
Kenyon (7-5) will stay on the road for its next game, which is slated for Wednesday at Oberlin College. That North Coast Athletic Conference game will have a 7:30 p.m. tip-off.
