GAMBIER, Ohio – The College of Wooster (8-4, 1-4 NCAC) registered 54 second-half points Wednesday night in its 91-78 North Coast Athletic Conference win over Kenyon College (4-8, 1-4 NCAC) at Tomsich Arena.
Led by Spencer Williams' 20-point effort, the Fighting Scots turned a one-possession game into a double-digit lead with just around 10 minutes left as the three-point line aided the visitors into an NCAC victory.
Kenyon was led by the conference's leading scorer
Tim Connolly. The senior totaled a game-high 26 points on 6-of-10 shooting while also grabbing five rebounds and dishing out four assists.
Brien Comey continued his recent stellar play with 18 points. Rounding out Kenyon's top scorers was
Alexander Powell who scored double-digits (10) for the second consecutive contest.
Alex Laub and
Tyler Kimble also contributed nine points each for the Lords.
The first half was highly contested between the two teams with four ties and four lead changes.
Nearly three-and-a-half minutes in, Wooster doubled up the Lords (10-5) after two free throws from Jordan Stock. Kenyon came back though and at about the midway point, Kimble buried a three-ball from the right wing to give Kenyon its first lead at 17-15. Comey later finished a layup at the 7:32 mark to give the home team its biggest lead (25-21).
But the Fighting Scots followed that Comey bucket with a 7-0 run capped off by two free throws to regain the lead. They held that advantage the remainder of the half and took a 37-34 lead into the locker room.
Second-half action saw Wooster extend its lead to as many as nine points (53-44) after a Josh Kipfer layup with 11:51 left.
The biggest deficit of the game didn't faze Kenyon though. The Lords responded with a 6-0 run highlighted by Powell's three-pointer and jumper which moved the count to 53-50.
After that small momentum swing in Kenyon's favor, Wooster came right back to go on the game-clinching run.
The Fighting Scots hit an 11-2 stretch highlighted by three straight three-point makes from Williams, Reece Dupler and Alex LaLonde to go up 64-52 with 8:15 left. Kenyon was able to pull the game within six points (69-63) following a shot from
Matt Shifrin with 5:37 left, but never got any closer.
Wooster shot 50% from the field in the second half and used a 79.4% (27-34) clip at the foul line to help them as well.
Next up for the Lords is a home date with DePauw University January 9 starting at 3 p.m.
