GAMBIER, Ohio – Sophomore
Alexander Powell engineered a last-minute rush that pushed the Kenyon College men's basketball team past the DePauw University Tigers during Saturday afternoon's North Coast Athletic Conference contest at Tomsich Arena. In a span of 70 seconds, Powell had a hand in seven Kenyon points, leading to an 82-75 victory for the Lords.
With Kenyon trailing 66-65 and 3:01 left in the game, Powell collected a pass from senior center
Brien Comey and buried a three-pointer that ended up putting the Lords ahead for good. Sophomore
Bennett Grigull then came up with a steal at midcourt, was fouled and made both his free throws to extend Kenyon's lead to 70-66.
On DePauw's next possession, Powell stole the ball away, pushed it down court and dished to
Ethan Shapiro, who converted a lay-up to give Kenyon a six-point advantage. DePauw then called a timeout, but that didn't stop Powell. After a missed Tigers' shot, Powell snared the rebound, led another fast break and fed Comey, who completed the run with a thunderous dunk.
The Lords had an eight-point lead at that point and polished off DePauw by making eight of their final ten free-throw attempts over the course of the last minute-and-a-half of play.
Powell finished the game with seven points, six rebounds, two assists and two steals. Of those numbers, three points, one rebound, both assists and both steals were registered in the final three minutes.
Tim Connolly also played a huge role, especially at the free throw line, in the Kenyon win. The senior guard racked up a game-high 27 points and was 14-of-17 at the stripe, where he was also a perfect 6-for-6 in the game's last two minutes. Connolly complemented those numbers with five rebounds and a pair of assists.
Comey added ten points and three rebounds to Kenyon's final stats, while sophomore
Alex Laub contributed eight points and eight rebounds. Grigull finished with nine points and so did senior
Tyler Kimble.
Prior to the late run, no team built a lead larger than six points. In the first half, the lead changed hands nine times and was tied up five different times. In the second half, the game was tied on four occasions and the lead changed two more times.
Sharp shooting assisted the Lords throughout the game as they went 27-of-48 (56.3 percent) overall and 5-of-12 (41.7 percent) from three-point land. On the other side of the court, DePauw was just 27-of-71 (38.0 percent) overall and 8-of-27 (29.6 percent) from long range.
The Tigers (6-7, 2-4 NCAC) were led by Luke Lattner, who poured in 26 points. No other DePauw player scored more than eight.
Kenyon (5-8, 2-4 NCAC) now heads back on the road Wednesday to battle rival Denison University at 8 p.m.
