GREENCASTLE, Ind. – DePauw University got a goal in each half and dealt the Kenyon College Lords soccer team a 2-1 defeat on Saturday afternoon in a North Coast Athletic Conference match at Reavis Stadium. It was the second straight loss for the Lords who hadn't been defeated in back-to-back contests since the opening of the 2011 season.
Saturday's action was pretty physical as eight yellow cards and 34 combined fouls were called against the two schools.
Within the first 12 minutes the Lords had gotten some opportunities on DePauw's goal.
Dalton Eudy attempted three corners while teammates
Oliver Wynn and
Tony Amolo each had header shots.
None of Kenyon's looks came through though and later DePauw took the lead.
After a yellow card was issued to the Lords with about 11 minutes left until halftime, DePauw's EJ Moore attempted a free kick at the top of the box and watched as it went through.
In the second half, that 1-0 scored remained the same until DePauw threatened just 52 seconds in. A handball was called against Kenyon in the box and Julian Gonzalez attempted the penalty kick. But senior keeper
Sam Clougher stepped up to make a save keeping the score at 1-0.
Kenyon continued putting pressure on DePauw later in the half. Between the 69th and 71st minutes, Amolo,
David Anderson and
Brice Koval each had on-goal attempts against Tigers goalie Harrison Glover. Unfortunately for the Lords, all three were saved.
Following Anderson's attempt, the Tigers pushed their lead to 2-0 when Zach Hoffman found Jonathan Wheeler at 72:07.
Down by a pair of scores, the Lords cut into the deficit as
Henry Myers tallied his third goal of the year on an assist from
Josh Lee and
Alberto Carmona. Kenyon had three more on-goal shots after that but Glover denied each of them as DePauw held on for the win.
Kenyon will try to break its minor slump October 8 when they welcome The College of Wooster to Gambier for a 3:30 p.m. match at Mavec Field.
Henry Myers tallied Kenyon's lone goal during Saturday's 2-1 loss at DePauw University. It was the second straight defeat
for Kenyon who hadn't lost back-to-back games since the start of the 2011 season.
