SPRINGFIELD, Ohio -- The Kenyon College Ladies field hockey team attempted only two shots against Wittenberg
on Saturday. But it was all the Ladies needed.
Sophomore
Sam Grunder scored late in the first half and junior goalkeeper
Sarah Speroff had 17 saves in goal to lead the Ladies to a 1-0 victory on the road. Speroff's 17 saves matched her career high, tying her performance against DePauw as a freshman on Oct. 11, 2014.
For the Ladies, it was their fourth straight win, including their third straight in the North Coast Athletic Conference. They are now 8-2 in the NCAC, tied with Denison at a half-game behind DePauw for the conference lead.
Wittenberg attempted just three shots in the first half, all three of which were saved by Speroff.
Â
Wittenberg poured it on from the start of the second half, attempting four shots in the first five minutes. They went on to attempt 18 shots in the half, 14 on target. But Speroff remained brilliant in goal, raising her save percentage to .871 on the season and lowering her goals against average to 1.19.
Grunder's shot was the first one attempted by the Ladies. She took a pass from junior
Katelyn Hutchinson to score with less than four minutes remaining in the first half. The goal was Grunder's second of the season -- she also scored the lone goal in Kenyon's 1-0 upset win over Christopher Newport on Oct. 6. For Hutchinson, it was her fifth assist on the season, giving her a team-high 21 points for 2016.
Junior
Shannon Hart had the only other shot for Kenyon in the 64th minute which was saved by Sarah Brownell.
Kenyon is now 10-4 overall. The Ladies will look to extend their winning streak to five games
Sunday, Oct. 16, on the road against Ohio Wesleyan University. That game starts at
noon.
