GRANVILLE, Ohio – When rivals clash, it's not always pretty.
Such was the case Saturday evening at Barclay Thomsen Field as the Kenyon College Lords and Denison University Big Red trudged through two red cards, seven yellows and a total of 30 fouls. When the smoke cleared, the visiting Lords escaped with a 1-0 North Coast Athletic Conference soccer win.
The first half of the battle was fairly even, with Kenyon launching five shots and Denison four. Near the 30-minute mark, however, Kenyon was slapped with a red card that left the team playing a man-down for nearly 60 minutes. Denison, which also earned a red card, did not receive it until there was one minute remaining in the contest.
In the second half, Kenyon cranked up the pressure, peppering the Denison net with 16 shots while yielding just three shots at the other end of the field. The offensive onslaught paid off at the 58:59 mark. Sophomore
David Anderson sent in one of Kenyon's eight corner kicks and the Big Red attempted to clear it. As the ball was on its way out of trouble, junior
Oliver Wynn tracked it down and booted in his fifth goal of the season, finding the upper left corner of the net from about 15 yards out. It was his second game-winning goal in the team's last two games.
Kenyon's defense deserved a lot of credit for the win. None of the seven shots the Big Red took were on goal, so senior goalkeeper
Sam Clougher did not have to make a single save to record his seventh shutout of the season and his Kenyon-record 41st shutout of his career.
The win improved the Lords' record to 11-2-0 overall and 4-1-0 in the North Coast Athletic Conference. It also ended a run in which Kenyon played nine of those first 13 games on the road. Up next are three straight home contests, starting with Hiram College on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.
Oliver Wynn scored his second game-winning goal in the Lords' last two contests.
His latest came Saturday evening in a 1-0 victory at rival Denison University.
