GAMBIER, Ohio – The Kenyon Lords (14-2, 7-1 NCAC) controlled possession, got two first-half goals and allowed Ohio Wesleyan University's offense to attempt just four shots in a 2-0 North Coast Athletic Conference win against their archrival on Tuesday afternoon at Mavec Field. With the victory, the Lords will play for their second straight regular season conference title at Wabash College this coming Saturday at 1 p.m.
It was also the second consecutive year the Lords defeated Ohio Wesleyan in the regular season. The last time that happened was in the 1955 and 1956 seasons.
In the first half, the Lords put a steady dose of pressure on OWU's defense as they held an 11-2 shots advantage.
Sophomore
Alberto Carmona got Kenyon's first legitimate look as he fired along the 18-yard box with 14:28 on the clock. The 0-0 score was then broken off a
Dalton Eudy corner three minutes later. The senior from Dallas was along the far side, and his kick was headed by
Henry Myers to teammate
Bret Lowry who finished with a header of his own.
The 1-0 Lords lead was then doubled by freshman
Philippe Stengel just before halftime. After
Greg McNeer passed into the box, Stengel's first shot was saved by OWU keeper Ben Farynowski, but the rebound came right back to the first year from Miami, Florida and he tapped it in.
Second-half action saw the home team continue to pepper the OWU goal while Kenyon's defense thwarted everything thrown at them.
Ohio Wesleyan took five corners in the second stanza and never got a shot off after any of those kicks as the Lords defense cleared the ball away each time.
By game's end, Kenyon had out-shot OWU 20-4 including an 8-0 lead in on-target attempts.
The shutout victory was the Lords first against the Battling Bishops since a 1-0 win October 2, 2007.
Philippe Stengel scored his second goal in as many matches as the Lords had virtually no problem against Ohio Wesleyan on
Tuesday. The 2-0 win improved Kenyon to 14-2 with a NCAC regular season crown on the line at Wabash this weekend.
