Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Lords’ offense lacks thunder against Trine

ANGOLA, Ind. – Junior guard Alexander Powell scored a team-high 16 points Friday, but the Kenyon College men's basketball team couldn't get its offense to click and fell 72-64 to the host Trine University Thunder in the opening day of the St. Andrews Products Classic.

Behind Powell's effort, freshman Ben Stern was the only other Kenyon player to hit a double-digit scoring mark. He scored 11, while Will Sigl had nine and Phillip Crampton had eight.

Just two games into the season, the 0-2 Lords are averaging just 62 points per game and shooting 35.8 percent as a team. Against Trine, the Lords were 20-of-52 (38.5 percent) from the field, but showed more life at the free throw line (19-of-27, 70.4 percent) and from three-point range (5-of-16, 31.3 percent).

Neither team got off to a great start, as the first three minutes of the game expired without a single point being recorded. Trine finally broke through with a Jared Dishop jumper and Kenyon promptly answered with a three-ball from Powell. Nearly another two minutes went by before another bucket found its mark. It turned out to be another three from Powell and the lead was 6-2.

Trine didn't score again until the 13:06 mark, but that bucket sparked a run that gave the Thunder a temporary 9-8 lead. Over the next five minutes, Kenyon used four Stern free throws to climb back to a five-point lead at 15-10.

That lead didn't last either. Trine scored six straight and 10 of the game's next 12 points to move ahead 20-17. The Thunder never relinquished that lead and made it to halftime with a 30-22 advantage. Kenyon shot just 5-of-21 (23.8 percent) in the first half and turned the ball over 11 times.

The Lords made the right adjustments and improved in the second half, but it was not enough to overcome the deficit. A three-pointer from Ethan Shapiro tied the game at 33-33 with 17:39 showing on the clock, but Trine responded with a 10-0 run and later opened up a game-high 13-point lead.

To its credit, Kenyon did not toss in the towel. The Lords whittled the Thunder lead down to one point twice, including pulling within 57-56 after a Crampton jumper at the 4:18 mark.

Trine (2-0) again had the answer and closed things out by scoring nine of the game's last 14 points, seven of which came at the free throw line. Will Dixson ended up scoring a game-high 22 points for the Thunder, while Jordan Kreglow, Kyle Dodson and Myles Copeland all rang up 11 points.

Kenyon will return to action tomorrow to face Albion College at 2 p.m. in the second and final day of the Classic.
