ANGOLA, Ind. – With just one second left in Saturday's men's basketball game, Corey Wheeler connected on a pair of free throws to lift the Albion College Britons to an 85-84 victory over the Kenyon College Lords in the consolation game of the St. Andrews Products Classic at Trine University.
The free throws capped a frantic rally by the Britons, who trailed by as many as eight points with just 2:37 left in the game. Two
Alexander Powell free throws, followed by another free throw from
Ethan Shapiro, gave the Lords that eight-point cushion down the stretch run.
Fifteen seconds after Shapiro's free throw, Arshawn Parker drained a three-pointer from Albion. Less than a minute later, Jaylin Fordham converted two free throws and pulled the Britons with three points with 1:33 left on the clock.
Kenyon then missed a three-point attempt and fouled on Albion's next possession. With 55 seconds remaining, Wheeler drained two more freebies at the line and the Britons were down one at 81-80. After another Kenyon miss, Fordham stroked a three-ball, only to be followed by a three-point play from Powell. That put Kenyon ahead 84-83 with just five seconds left.
After some strategizing and burning a couple of timeouts, the Britons (1-1) drew the foul they needed and Wheeler went to the line to finish the deal with just one tick on the clock. He ended up with a game-high 26 points on 9-of-17 shooting from the floor and 7-of-9 shooting at the line. Fordham finished with 14 points, Adam Davis had 13 and Darius Branch rounded out the double-digit scorers for Albion with 10 points.
Kenyon (0-3) had its best offensive game of the early season, shooting 47.7 percent overall, 43.8 percent from three-point range and 75.0 percent at the line. Sophomore guard
Matt Shifrin connected on a trio of three-pointers to lead Kenyon with 17 points. Powell, a junior, and freshman
Ben Stern each finished with 16, while
Phillip Crampton, another junior, tossed in 14.
Shapiro added a team-high seven rebounds and led Kenyon to a 41-30 advantage on the glass.
The game featured 19 different lead changes and 14 occasions in which the score was tied. Albion's biggest lead was by nine points at halftime (48-39), while Kenyon's biggest lead was the eight-point cushion at the 2:37 mark.
The Lords now return to campus and will play their first home game of the season Tuesday evening against Earlham College.
