Ladies capture NCAC tournament title

GREENCASTLE, Ind. – Katelyn Hutchinson's penalty stroke goal 3:38 into overtime Saturday gave the Kenyon College field hockey team an upset win over host DePauw University in the North Coast Athletic Conference tournament championship game.

The tournament title was Kenyon's second in the last three seasons and its fourth overall. The Ladies, the tournament's No. 3-seeded, team first upended Denison University, 2-1, in Wednesday's semifinal and then followed up with Saturday's shocker over top-seeded DePauw. The tournament title also guarantees the Ladies will advance to play in the upcoming NCAA Division III tournament.

With the score knotted 1-1 at the end of regulation, DePauw started the extra session with two shots on goal. Kenyon goalkeeper Sarah Speroff, a junior, denied both of those shots and the Ladies took the ball in the opposite direction.

About three minutes later, freshman Hannah Sklar, who scored both of Kenyon's goals against Denison, fired a shot at the DePauw cage, but it was turned aside by goalkeeper Sarah Foye. As that play unfolded, DePauw was whistled for an infraction and the officials awarded Kenyon a penalty stroke.

Hutchinson, a junior who now leads the team with 11 goals, lined up the shot and placed it perfectly into the upper right corner of the cage, giving Foye no chance at the save.

The win moved the Ladies' overall season record to 14-6, while the loss stopped DePauw's win streak at 11 and dropped its record to 17-4.

Before the overtime excitement took place, it was DePauw that scored the first goal and put all the pressure on the visiting Ladies. Playing off a penalty corner, the Tigers moved the ball around the arc from left to right. Addie Ball then let a shot loose from the right side. As it travel toward the goal, Paige Berliner, the NCAC's leading scorer, redirected it into the left side of the Kenyon cage. That goal occurred just two minutes into the game.

The Kenyon offense then went to work and fired off eight shots during the rest of the first half. One of those shots, at the 25:41 mark, came from Kelsey Trulik, who tallied her third and most important goal of the season. The play also developed off a penalty corner. After Hutchinson accepted the inserted pass at the top of the arc, she passed to Trulik, who was cutting in from the left side. Trulik then one-timed the pass with a shot that found the right side of the Tigers' cage.

That was one of 12 shots for the Ladies, who were out-shot 14-12 for the game. Speroff ended up making eight saves for the Ladies was named the MVP of the tournament. Other Kenyon players earning a spot on the All-Tournament team were Trulik, Shannon Hart and Paige Beyer.

The Ladies will move on to likely play a first-round NCAA tournament game on Wednesday, November 9. They'll know for sure what their future holds when the NCAA releases the Division III tournament bracket late Sunday night.
