SPRINGFIELD, Ohio – The Wittenberg University Tigers forced the Kenyon College men's basketball team into a season-high 21 turnovers and a season-low scoring output Monday at Pam Evans Smith Arena. That unsavory combination resulted in a 76-53 North Coast Athletic Conference loss for the Lords, who remain winless on the road this season.
Trouble started early for the Lords (2-7, 1-4 NCAC), who watched the Tigers utilize a 13-3 run to take an 18-8 lead mid-way through the first half. While the Tigers used a balanced attack during that run, the Lords shot just 2-of-10 and turned the ball over five times.
Kenyon coach
Dan Priest made some lineup changes and junior
Bennett Grigull responded by dropping in a pair of three-pointers.
Phillip Crampton added another bucket from long range and Kenyon pulled within 18-14. Unfortunately for the Lords, their run was followed by a 10-2 Wittenberg spurt that helped propel the Tigers into the break with a 39-24 lead.
Wittenberg's Jaelin Williams scored 11 of his game-high 17 points in the first half, as he was 4-for-5 overall and a perfect 3-for-3 on three-pointers. Crampton was also 3-for-3 on long balls and led he Lords with nine points at the break.
Kenyon continued to fare well from distance in the second half and finished the game 10-of-23 from beyond the arc (43.5 percent), however, the Lords were just 19-of-50 overall (38.0 percent). On the other end of the court, the Tigers were 4-for-17 from long range (23.5 percent), but shot 27-of-54 overall (50.0 percent).
Wittenberg (6-3, 3-2 NCAC) also got a huge boost at the free throw line, where it sank 18-of-28 free throws. Kenyon made just nine trips to the line and connected on five free throws.
The Lords never got closer than 13 points in the second half and Wittenberg's lead grew by as many as 25 points.
Crampton finished with a team-high 16 points and Grigull ended up with ten.
Matt Shifrin scored eight points and dished out three assists, while
Ethan Shapiro accounted for 11 of the Lords' 26 rebounds.
Like Kenyon, Wittenberg had just two double-digit scorers. Williams' 17 points led the way, while Chad Roy added 13 points.
Kenyon now enters the holiday break and will be back in action December 29 at home in a non-conference contest against Westminster College.
Ethan Shapiro grabbed 11 of Kenyon's 26 rebounds during a 76-53 loss at Wittenberg University.
