GRANVILLE, Ohio – The Kenyon Ladies' offensive struggles against Denison University, which date back to last season, continued again on Saturday as the team connected on a season-low 21.7 percent from the field in a 42-35 Big Red win at Livingston Gymnasium.
Denison snapped a five-game losing streak with the victory while Kenyon fell to 5-2 and 1-1 in North Coast Athletic Conference play.
Paige Matijasich was Kenyon's most efficient offensive weapon as she connected on 5-of-8 from the field and scored 10. She also grabbed five rebounds.
Bailey Dominguez added a game-high 14 points but she was just 5-of-20 from the field. In the contest, Kenyon struggled from beyond the arc hitting just four on 28 attempts. All those makes came from Dominguez.
Kenyon was down 5-0 about three minutes in before a Dominguez three-ball off an inbound pass from
Sidney Cera and a
Griffin Tullis jumper tied it up at the 5:36 mark. Denison went up again, 11-7, with a minute to play in the first before Kenyon rallied again. Matijasich and Tullis each registered layups and tied it up at 11 at the end of the first.
In the second, the Ladies got their first lead of the game at 6:51 when Dominguez hit another three-pointer bringing the tally to 16-13. The score remained within one possession the rest of the way before Matijasich closed the quarter with a pair of buckets including a buzzer-beater layup putting the Ladies up 20-18 at half.
Third-quarter action saw Denison get ahead for good as the Ladies hit just 1-of-11 while the Big Red were able to hit five of their 13 attempts. After a
Charlotte Bussema free throw gave Kenyon a 23-20 lead, the Big Red went on a 10-1 run. The home team took the lead for good (24-23) on a three-ball from Erica Holmes and they took a 30-24 lead into the fourth.
Dominguez's third 3-pointer with 8:25 left got Kenyon to within one point (30-29) and later, a Cera free throw pulled the score to 37-35, but Kenyon wasn't able to get over the hump as Denison prevailed 42-35.
The Ladies will try and bounce back on December 7 when they welcome Allegheny College at 6 p.m.
