SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – On the heels of a 63-rebound effort against Lake Forest College, the Kenyon College Ladies (8-4) started strong Friday, but faded late in a 59-57 overtime loss to the Wisconsin-Stevens Point Pointers (8-3) during the second and final day of the Arizona Shootout at Scottsdale Community College.
Kenyon was led by sophomore
Jessica Gerber's season-high 17 points, but the Pointers countered with a combined 27 points and 16 rebounds from senior Autumn Hennes and junior Mickey Roland.
The Ladies took charge early and led by as many as 16 points in the first quarter. Four points apiece from sophomore
Sharon Hull and senior
Charlotte Bussema allowed Kenyon to take a 24-10 lead after the first ten minutes of play.
The second frame, however, belonged to the Pointers. With a combined eight points from Hennes and junior Taylor Barrett, Wisconsin-Stevens Point went on a 16-7 run to cut into the Ladies' lead at the half, 31-26.
The teams moved step for step in the third quarter. A pair or perimeter jumpers from Gerber held up Kenyon's pace and the teams went into the final frame with the Ladies holding a 41-36 advantage.
In the fourth, Wisconsin-Stevens Point started to surge and outscored the Ladies 16-11. With less than three minutes to play, the Pointers held a 52-50 lead, but Kenyon senior
Sidney Cera kept the Ladies' hopes alive when she buried the game-tying basket to move the game into overtime with the score knotted, 52-52.
In extra time, the Ladies struggled to knock down field goals and were put in a position to foul and send the Pointers to the line, where they connected on 5-of-6 free throw attempts to seal the two-point victory.
After splitting their two games in the Arizona Shootout, the Ladies will return home and prepare for Wednesday's home game against the Wittenberg Tigers. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. in Tomsich Arena.
Sophomore guard Jessica Gerber tied her career-high with 17 points Friday, but
the Ladies came up just a bit short in a 59-57 overtime loss to Wisconsin-Stevens Point.
