GAMBIER, Ohio – The Kenyon College women's basketball team just couldn't get its offense in gear Wednesday night and saw its six-game win streak snapped by the North Coast Athletic Conference-leading Denison University Big Red. The Ladies scored just twice in the first half and wound up on the short side of a 39-25 final score.
The Ladies entered the game with a second-place spot in the conference standings, but saw their records slip to 15-7 overall and 9-4 in the NCAC, three-and-a-half games behind Denison, which improved to 20-3 overall and 13-1 in conference play.
The visiting Big Red opened the game with a Jordan Holmes' block that seemed to set the tone for the rest of the game. The 6-1 Holmes, who leads all NCAA Division III players in blocked shots and ranks second in rebounding, finished the game against Kenyon with five blocked shots and 18 rebounds.
Holmes' presence in the paint seemed to put a bit of hesitancy in the Ladies, who were 0-of-7 shooting in the first quarter and just 2-of-16 (12.5 percent) for the half. The Denison offense wasn't exactly tearing it up either. The Big Red got to halftime with a 17-4 lead, but they shot just 8-of-25 (32.0 percent).
Kenyon made up some ground in the third quarter by outscoring the Big Red 12-8. Freshman
Lane Davis had four points in the frame and sophomore
Griffin Tullis added a three-pointer.
Trailing 25-16 at the start of the fourth quarter. Kenyon was unable to mount a comeback. Denison went on a 12-2 run to open a 19-point lead, its largest of the game. Emily Krumpe had six points in the run and Akilah Fletcher had four for the Big Red.
Both Krumpe and Holmes finished with 12 points and led a Denison offense that outscored Kenyon 28-4 in the paint. That duo accounted for 62 percent of the Big Red's scoring and led Denison to a big 45-26 advantage in rebounding.
Tullis and
Jessica Gerber led Kenyon with five points apiece. Davis,
Bailey Dominguez and
Ifeoma Archimalo each had four. On the glass, Davis, Archimalo and
Miranda Diesz shared the team lead with four rebounds each.
