GREENCASTLE, Ind. –
Alexander Powell tallied a career-high 22 points while
Tim Connolly scored the go-ahead layup with three seconds left to give the Kenyon College Lords an 81-79 win over DePauw University Saturday afternoon.
The first eight minutes of the game saw the Lords (9-15, 6-10 NCAC) start on fire as they hit 7-of-10 from the field and gain an 18-11 lead following
Alex Laub's jumper.
DePauw (7-16, 3-13 NCAC) countered the fast Kenyon start and was able to tie the contest at 23 as James Clark hit a three-ball with 7:56 left.
The two schools tussled back and forth on the next couple of possessions before the Tigers went on a run to take a lead into half. With the scored tied at 26, DPU hit a 10-2 stretch highlighted by a pair of three-pointers from Clark to go up 36-28.
Kenyon was able to pull the deficit to five (41-36) heading to the locker room as Powell scored a layup with five ticks remaining.
The visitors opened the second stanza on a 13-0 run with five different players contributing points. Kenyon gained a 49-41 lead after
Bennett Grigull scored a layup just over five minutes into the half.
The Lords maintained their lead and went up as many as 12 points (58-46) before a late run by the Tigers put Kenyon's comeback bid in jeopardy.
Leading by nine (76-67), the Lords watched as the Tigers went on a 12-2 run capped off by Luke Lattner's jumper which put DPU up 79-78 with about a minute left.
Kenyon didn't panic and on the ensuing possession watched as
Will Sigl hit a free throw to tie the game. On DePauw's next possession a missed shot came into the hands of Sigl giving the Lords a chance to take the lead.
They did so on the next possession as Connolly drove left baseline and scored a layup while being fouled. The senior missed the free throw but it didn't matter as DPU's jumper at the buzzer after a timeout was taken didn't ring true, preserving the Lords victory.
Next up for Kenyon is a trip to Wittenberg University February 17 starting at 7:30 p.m.
