SPRINGFIELD, Ohio – Wednesday night, the Kenyon College men's basketball team made the trip to Wittenberg University and chalked up a 67-58 win on the Tigers' home court. It was the Lords' first win at Wittenberg since the 2008-09 season.
That last win, seven seasons ago, was a first-round North Coast Athletic Conference tournament game that Kenyon claimed, 65-60. Since then, the Lords dropped six straight contests at Wittenberg. Prior to the win in 2008-09, the Lords had not won at Wittenberg in more than 65 years.
Regardless of the length of time, the Lords' accomplishment Wednesday night was noteworthy. Senior guard
Tim Connolly scored 24 points, sophomore
Alexander Powell threw in eight and both
Matt Shifrin and
Brien Comey added seven as the Kenyon starters accounted for 60 percent of the team's offensive production.
Wittenberg (14-10, 9-8 NCAC) maintained early leads and even moved ahead by seven points (19-12) with eight-and-a-half minutes left in the first half. Kenyon then kicked it into gear and caught the Tigers at 23-23 and again at 28-28. During that run, Shifrin had five points and Powell had four.
Before the teams could get to the break, Kenyon put together a 7-0 streak to close out the final three minutes of the half.
Ethan Shapiro scored the final five points of that seven-point spurt and pushed the Lords out to a 35-28 advantage at halftime.
Kenyon (10-14, 7-10 NCAC) did not shoot well from long distance, but did shoot 56.1 percent overall. At the other end of the court, the Lords took advantage of a cold Tigers team. Wittenberg shot just 37.9 percent for the game, including only 14.3 percent (4-of-28) from outside the three-point arc.
In the second half, Kenyon increased its lead to as many as 11 points on three different occasions. A layup from Connolly at the 10:56 mark gave the Lords a 48-37 cushion. A little more than a minute later,
Tyler Kimble canned a three-pointer to put Kenyon ahead 52-41. Finally, with 6:10 on the clock, a Connolly layup made the score 57-46 in favor of the Purple and White.
The Tigers did not go away quietly. An 8-0 run followed and Wittenberg was within three points (59-56) with 3:23 remaining, but Kenyon kept its composure and knocked down its free throws the rest of the way to secure the victory. Connolly, Powell and Shifrin all converted a pair at the stripe within the game's last two minutes.
With one game left to play in the regular season, Kenyon has the eighth-place spot locked down in the NCAC standings. The Lords will host Wabash College in the regular-season finale Saturday and then will hit the road again for Tuesday's first round of the conference tournament.
Tim Connolly scored 24 points Wednesday night and helped the Lords to a 67-58 win
at Wittenberg, ending a nine-game losing streak to the Tigers.
