GAMBIER, Ohio – A huge second quarter propelled the Kenyon College Ladies (16-8, 10-5 NCAC) to a 62-47 win over Wittenberg University Wednesday night at Tomsich Arena. The victory stopped a two-game losing skid for Kenyon.
Three players scored in double figures for Kenyon highlighted by
Bailey Dominguez's and
Griffin Tullis' 12 points apiece. Tullis also grabbed a team-high nine rebounds and blocked three shots, the most of her career. Adding 10 more was
Ifeoma Archimalo who hit 4-of-5 from the field.
As a whole, the Ladies' offense was night and day better than the previous three contests which saw the team hit just 28 percent of its shots. On this night, Kenyon hit 45 percent from the field and shoot 10-of-13 for 76 percent from the foul line.
First-quarter action was close throughout with both teams trading buckets.
There were five ties in the opening stanza. Becca Ziska tallied eight points to lead Witt while
Charlotte Bussema and Archimalo each tallied four to pace Kenyon. The Ladies held a 16-14 lead after the first 10 minutes of play with
Hannah O'Day tallying Kenyon's last jumper with about two minutes left.
In the second, it was all Kenyon.
The home team opened with an 8-0 run capped off by a
Sidney Cera three-ball from the right wing to push Kenyon's lead to 24-14 with 8:16 remaining. Kenyon's defense was suffocating in the second period limiting the Tigers to just 2-for-16 shooting. In the closing seconds of the period, Tullis' block of Ziska near the left block put a stamp on the Ladies' efforts on the defensive side. Kenyon took a 34-20 lead into the break.
In the third, the lead blossomed to as many as 20 points on a pair of occasions as
Miranda Diesz and
Lane Davis provided layups for Kenyon.
On the other side, the closest Witt got was 11 points (55-44) which came with 3:45 left after a Madison Linn layup.
Kenyon will close out its regular season this Saturday at The College of Wooster starting at 1 p.m. The Ladies won the previous matchup 79-55 on January 16.
Sophomore Griffin Tullis was superb on both ends of the floor on Wednesday as she scored 12 points,
grabbed nine rebounds and blocked a career-high three shots in the Ladies' 62-47 win over Wittenberg.
