WOOSTER, Ohio -- The Kenyon College Ladies held on to a slim lead at the end of a back-and-forth tug-of-war with The College of Wooster on Saturday and pulled off a 65-64 victory at Timken Gymnasium in their final regular-season basketball game of the 2015-16 season.
The host Fighting Scots had a chance to win the game in the final seconds, but a jump shot by Lauren Hancher fell short.
Bailey Dominguez got the defensive rebound, but Wooster was awarded the ball on a tie-up with 0.2 seconds remaining. The Scots were able to get the ball inbounded, but unable to get a shot off before time expired.
Kenyon (17-8, 11-5 NCAC) didn't hold the lead until four minutes into the second quarter. That happened after sophomore
Griffin Tullis hit a three-pointer to give the Ladies a 20-19 edge. When junior
Sidney Cera hit another trey with 1:28 showing in the first half, Kenyon took the lead again -- this time, the Ladies held that lead until the fourth quarter. That lead grew to as much as 10 in the third period.
Wooster (6-19, 2-14 NCAC) never waved the white flag. The Fighting Scots closed the third quarter on 12-5 tear that brought the score to 48-45 in favor of the Ladies.
The lead changed hands several times in the final frame, but Ladies took the lead for good on consecutive baskets by
Hannah O'Day,
Miranda Diesz and
Ifeoma Archimalo. At the other end of the court, Wooster went without a field goal for nearly four minutes, making space for Kenyon to build a 61-55 lead with 3:04 to play.
Kenyon went cold from that point, hitting just two of its final seven shots, but the Ladies hung on for the victory using layups from O'Day and Cera.
Archimalo led Kenyon with 12 points on 5-of-8 shooting. Diesz and Tullis each contributed nine points.
Jessica Gerber added eight points, and Cera and
Charlotte Bussema each had six.
Hancher led all scorers with 25 points. Anna Gibbs had a double-double for Wooster, landing 10 points and 14 rebounds.
The Fighting Scots shot 50 percent (24-for-48) from the floor. However, the Ladies got off a lot more field goals (66) and converted 26 of them.
The Ladies now turn their focus to the North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament, set to begin at Tuesday with a home game against the Hiram College Terriers.
