COLUMBUS, Ohio --
Robert Jacobs set the pace offensively for the Lords in the Kenyon men's lacrosse regular season opener, finding the back of the cage five times in an 11-8 win over Capital University. Jacobs scored Kenyon's first goal, the game-winning goal, as well as Kenyon's last three goals.
Â
Jacobs was helped out by multiple-goal efforts from three of his teammates:
Josh Galardi,
Alex Lopez and
Jonah Florence. Defensively,
Patrick Shevelson recorded 13 saves in the win, including two stops on 1-on-1 opportunities in front of the crease.
Â
The Lords had a slow start to the contest as Capital scored the game's first two goals within four minutes from the opening faceoff. After trailing 2-0, Kenyon rallied to score nine of the game's next 11 goals, including a stretch in the first quarter of four unanswered goals. By the end of that stretch, Kenyon had pushed their lead to 9-4 with about three minutes left in the third.
Â
Capital did not go down without a fight, however, as the Crusaders fought back to cut the deficit to 10-8 with 8:40 to play in the fourth quarter. Nick Hess scored three goals in that stretch for the Crusaders.
Â
That was the closest Capital could trim into that deficit, as the Lords defense did not surrender a goal after that point. Kenyon also held last year's Ohio Athletic Conference Freshman and Co-Offensive Player of the Year, Brennan O'Callaghan, to just two goals. O'Callaghan scored 64 goals in 15 games last season for Capital.
Â
Up next for the Lords is their home opener, Saturday February 27, against Albion College. The opening faceoff is scheduled for 1:00 PM at McBride Field.
Â
Junior Robert Jacobs scored five times Wednesday afternoon as the Lords claimed an 11-8 victory at Capital.
Kenyon trailed 2-0 early before getting in gear and scoring nine of the game's next 11 goals.
