GAMBIER, Ohio -- The Kenyon College men's lacrosse team was able to get into the win column again Saturday afternoon, defeating Albion College by a count of 14-9. The second half saw the Lords power through the visiting Britons for nine goals while allowing just four to claim the victory.
Kenyon trailed 7-6 in the third quarter, but scored five unanswered goals in 5:29 to open up an 11-7 lead entering the game's final quarter.
Kenyon senior goalkeeper
Patrick Shevelson had plenty to do with the Lords' win, as he recorded 19 saves, the second-best, single-game total of his four-year career as a starter. His best output was a 21-save effort against The College of Wooster his freshman year.
The Lords needed every ounce of effort from Shevelson because, statistically, they were outshot by the Britons 60-45. Albion also put pressure on the Lords at the faceoff square, where the Britons received an incredible effort from Kyle DeCamp, who won 23-for-26 faceoffs and scooped up 17 ground balls.
The Lords countered in the offensive zone with an array of scoring options, as nine different players were able to find the back of the cage. Sophomore
Jonah Florence led the way with four points on a goal and three assists. Junior
Alex Lopez stepped up with a three-goal effort, while
Chris Ferraro, another sophomore, matched Lopez with his first career hat trick.
Defensively, the Lords were able to kill 7-of-9 Albion extra-man opportunities. Kenyon also converted 28-of-32 clears, a step up from the season opener when the Lords were just 10-for-18.
Once again, the Lords finished the game strong, as Albion did not score in the final 8:26. The Kenyon defense has yielded just two fourth-quarter goals in each of its first two contests this season.
Four road games await the Lords over the next three weeks, before returning home to face Otterbein University on March 23. Kenyon will battle St. Mary's College of Maryland on the road to begin the road trip on March 9, with the opening faceoff scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
