Galardi sparks Kenyon rally at St. Mary’s

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – Sophomore Josh Galardi scored six goals, including five in the third quarter, to spark a Kenyon College rally that lifted the Lords lacrosse team to a 16-13 victory over the host Seahawks from Saint Mary's College of Maryland.

The Lords' Wednesday win bumped their record to 3-0 for the first time since the 2007 campaign. On the other side of the field, St. Mary's, which led Kenyon by as many as five goals, slipped to 1-3.

The Seahawks took control early, using two goals from J.G. Hahn to jump out to a 4-2 lead. Nicholas Wilkinson added another St. Mary's goal and then Luke Eshleman scored the last goal of the first quarter and the first goal of the second quarter to push the Seahawks out to a 7-2 advantage.

Kenyon sophomore Pierce Kraft stopped the streaking Seahawks by netting two Kenyon goals within a five minute span of the second quarter. A few minutes later, Galardi recorded his first goal of the game and the Lords went into halftime carrying a 9-5 deficit.

The appropriate adjustments were addressed during the break and the Lords put together an offensive rush that not only pulled them back into the game, but put them in control as they outscored the Seahawks 9-3 in the quarter.

Galardi scored the first goal of the half on an assist from Chris Ferraro. Robert Jacobs then scored to close the Lords' gap to two, at 9-7. The teams traded goals until St. Mary's had an 11-8 lead with 6:50 left in the quarter. Kenyon then exploded for five straight goals in under five minutes. Galardi scored three of the goals during the run and Roberts scored the other two. Roberts also had an assist on one of the goals and C.J. Clinkscales assisted on two others. Before the quarter expired, Alex Lopez fired in a man-up goal to send Kenyon into the fourth quarter with a 14-12 lead.

The pace of the game took a drastic swing in the final quarter, as both teams tightened the screws on the defensive end. Bobby Weiner gave the Lords their largest lead (15-12) with an unassisted goal at the 10:58 mark. The next goal did not come until there were just two minutes left in the game. At that moment, St. Mary's Conor Jordan found Kenyon twine, only to be answered by the game's final goal from Kenyon freshman Nick Vitale with 1:10 left on the clock.

Following up on Galardi's six goals, Jacobs finished with three goals and an assist for Kenyon. Kraft had two goals and an assist, while Clinkscales added a goal and two assists.

Between the pipes, Kenyon senior Patrick Shevelson had another outstanding game, making 17 saves and allowing just four second-half goals. He also helped the Lords defense fight off five man-down situations.

Next up for the Lords is a trip to Franklin & Marshall College to battle the Diplomats at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
