GAMBIER, Ohio -- The Kenyon College Ladies didn't hold the lead very long in Saturday's North Coast Athletic Conference women's basketball game against Ohio Wesleyan University. But they held it when it counted.
Junior forward
Bailey Dominguez hit a three-pointer with 42 seconds left to tie the game, then junior
Sidney Cera and freshman
Lane Davis hit three free throws in the final 15 seconds to give the Ladies a 62-59 victory over the visiting Battling Bishops.
The victory was the Ladies' sixth straight, all in conference play.
The Ladies (15-6, 9-3 NCAC) held the lead only three times in the game, all three times for less than a minute. Their first lead came early in the first period, when
Ifeoma Archimalo took a feed from Cera and scored to make the score 7-5. Their other lead came midway through the third, when
Hannah O'Day scored off a pass from
Jessica Gerber. In both cases, Ohio Wesleyan (5-17, 4-9 NCAC) took the lead back on the next possession.
The Ladies' final lead, however, was theirs for good.
Kenyon trailed by six, 56-50, with 4:19 to play. Dominguez drained a three-pointer then, after junior
Miranda Diesz hit a layup, Davis scored while fouled on a put-back. The ensuing free throw made the score 57-55 in favor of OWU.
Kenyon brought the game to within one point on sophomore
Griffin Tullis' free throw, but Taylor Dickson hit an open shot for OWU to give the Battling Bishops a three-point lead with a minute to go.
Dominguez finished with a team-high 17 points. Davis had her first career double-double, with a season-high 16 points to go along with 11 rebounds. Archimalo scored six points, while Cera and senior
Molly Rubin each chipped in five points.
After a 9-9 start to the game, the Battling Bishops went on a 12-4 run to lead, 21-13, after one period. That lead grew to 10 before the Ladies outscored OWU, 5-0, over the final five minutes of the first half.
Kenyon outrebounded OWU, 46-32, and the Ladies' bench outscored the Bishops', 29-0. Additionally, the Ladies scored 17 second-chance points, including nine in the final period.
Kenyon will now look to make it seven straight wins when it hosts rival Denison University on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
Freshman Lane Davis registered her first collegiate double-double in the Kenyon women's 62-59 win
over Ohio Wesleyan University. Davis finished the game with 16 points and 11 rebounds.
